Picture Messaging on 3650 Problems

15 replies · 3,609 views · Started 26 April 2003

Hey guys,
Have any of u tried it? I ran into two probs.
1. With MMC selected for memory the phone gets SYSTEM ERROR whenever I try to insert a picture in2 a text msg. This is solved by copying the PICTURES folder and the .ota files over to MMC in same spot.
2. But when it finally inserts ok it takes up 3 SMS! Its horrendous! Same price as a MMS here! Anyone got a solution to this?

Thanks
Also has anyone managed to transfer the old style Nokia graphics for picture msg's (ie. logomanager) to the 3650?
jeff.
ps. i'm on 2.41 3650.

Yeah

Don't use it, it's crap anyway, stooopid mono crappy pictures, use MMS and tell your mates it's about time they got themselves decent phones so you can send them colour pix instead of those crap 'lego' pictures 😊

.... Well what answer did you expect! 😉

Best 😊
nopeit works fine with me
and logomanager doaent seem to work
im 2.50
what happens when u insert a picture? does it come up as one or three sms's?

will - most of my friends use old nokias though!

Just tried it myself.
The picture inserted ok without any errors - and sent it as 3 sms's

Cost - 3x8p = 24p
MMS = 21p

Best 😊

No, cause sms is text only - so your nokia converts your pic into 7bit txt, simular to what e-mail used to do when it first came out when adding attachments, you had to encode into txt first.

That txt is longer than 160 chars so it it split into mutiple sms's.

When it's received the other end the text is put back together into a picture by the phone.

Bit of a dirty description, but you get the idea 😊

but my question is; wasn't it only one message before? like when u send picture messages normally its only one sms isn't it? and when u send it from the internet its only one sms??

thanks will
jeff.

A Nokia picture message has to my knowledge always been at least 3 SMSs long. That is because the picture is 72x28 pixels = 2016 bits = 252 bytes. Also it isn't 7-bit encoded, it uses 8-bit SMS. An 8-bit SMS is 140 bytes long so 252 bytes need 2 SMS to fit, but there is also other parts that "consumes" bytes in a picture message so it takes 3 SMS. Within those 3 SMS it is possible to add 121 characters without increasing the required number of SMSs. Some gateways may charge for 1 or 2 SMS even though it "technically" takes 3 😊

You explained it MUCH better than I ever could 😊
And I bow to your superiour knowladge about the 7-8 bit encoding 😉

Cheers 😊

really? i didn't know that.. i always thought it was normal. like i used to always send picture msg's only 25c but nowadays with voda it costs me 3x! damn..

anyway thanks for explaining it; and thanks for nearly trying will!

can any of u explain why chinese only allows for 70characters?

jeff.

jeff.
That is because chinese uses Unicode, an Unicode character is 2 bytes, and since an SMS is 140 bytes it makes 70 😊

and since an SMS is 140 bytes it makes 70

.. wait i always thought it was 160 characters?

also here's an interesting extract about picture msg's from vodafone auz. brings up a new q though; (also can't post URL as u have to register ur real name/phone number)
TXT messages are charged at 25c each once the message has been sent from your mobile.

The following apply;

This price is not impacted by the amount of characters sent within the message. The maximum amount of characters that can be sent in one TXT is 160.
Picture Messages are also charged at 25c each once sent from your mobile. The same charge applies when sending to mobile phones from other Networks as well as to overseas*. TXT messages sent to a computer from your Vodafone mobile phone eg.ICQ also incurs a 25c charge once the TXT message has been sent from your phone.
There is no charge for receiving TXT messages unless they are TXT Delivery Status Reports which are charged at 5c per report, or TXT Updates (information service) which are 25c each to receive.
This price applies to ALL Vodafone customers including Pre Pay and Post Pay. Certain plans may offer FREE TXT eg. Options Plan. Please check with your Service Provider.
*For Global Roaming customers, TXT charges are set by the overseas network provider with whom you roam, similar to outgoing call costs. Consequently, TXT charges will vary from network to network and from country to country. Click here for pricing information.

hmm does that mean because i can't disable reports i pay 5c extra everytime?? but the picture msg's is sorted out 😊

Hehe, 7-bit SMS is 160 characters, while 8-bit SMS is 140. 7-bit SMS can only be used to send ASCII characters as well as most European 'special characters' like or Swedish . 8-bit SMS can send any data including Unicode characters. You see the forumula is:

7 * 160 = 1120 bits
8 * 140 = 1120 bits

so 160 7-bits characters is the same as 140 8-bits 😉

sorry but i'm a bit thick.. howcome i can send 160 on my phone though? i've noticed some special characters take up 2 characters..

160 characters of which type? As long as you send an ordinary non-Unicode text SMS you have 160 chars available since it uses 7-bits chars.
