A little trolling I guess: what's next

This might be considered trolling, but here goes if you are interested.
I had a 7650 for some time, bought lots of software, got a lot of use out of it. I took a risk and switched to MS smartphone (SPV) after getting pissed off with bluetooth crap synchronisation with XP once too many times. I've seen talks here where everyone laughed in a superior manner about the SPV. here's m pluses/minuses if it is of interest:

better screen: bigger, more colours
unlimited memory via SD card
real mp3 player
much sturdier construction (though still too plasticy)
excellent auto-lookup feature, first name last name or any name
"real" IE - at least, better than wap only, of course can add this to 7650 with Opera, but quite costly!
decertification is no longer an issue via Orange decert process

negatives:
small keyboard
no bluetooth (not that it's worth much in the 7650 anyway)
no java (but other options)
no camera built in (but I never use it)

And the big winner: synchronisation really works! Much easier by cable than by bluetooth too, since I never left bluetooth running and had to muck around starting it up on both ends.

Anyway, back onto a hopefully non trolling line of thought. Both phones are first generation products. I think, that after a buggy start, the new firmwares on SPV really make it a lot better than the 7650. Let's not argue that too much unless you really want to. I'm interested in what's coming next from Nokia and MS. Which will be best?

I really like the look of the new samsung series 60 device: looks like a real winner, and I think better than the SPV.

In the MS camp, the ozone devices will support bluetooth and probably have camera built in, definitely a better keyboard. look at the Mitac Mio (if it comes out), the Intel reference design (looks great), the asus. Looks like MS is doing some good stuff.

Between them and the samsung, it would be a hard choice. I don't like the P800 because it is too big and not one handed. What do you think the next Nokia will be? Do you think it will close the gap or crush the competition? If it is better than the samsung, then wow!

I'd like to see:
MMC/SD
800*600 resolution camera
smaller, more quality construction
bluetooth that works, with headset profile
complete rewrite of the sync application
option to sync via cable
wap 2
65k colours
no weird design like the 3650: the 7650 looks great, just too thick/big now
keyboard like the 6800 would be wonderful!!!!

If I had all of that, I'd be back with Nokia. But the sync one is a biggie!

Anyway, that was a way of passing a boring Friday afternoon. Look forward to your flames or ideas.

hell, I'll flame myself 😮ops:

I think the sonyericsson Z1010 looks wonderful. Stick series 60 or ms smartphone onto that body, with sd card instead of proprietary memory stick, and that would be the absolute winner in my books.

back to you ... anyone?

I agree with you about the new Samsung - looks like it could be quite small compared to the Series 60 phones out at the moment.

After seeing the camera for the SPV I can understand why you don't use it. Looks like it's made of the cheapest plastic ever! 😃 Bit of a shame as the phone doesn't look too bad (as long as you don't mistake it for your TV remote).

I'm more than happy with my 7650 at the moment though
- It's weird, when I first got it I thought it was as big as a house brick - but it seems perfectly fine 9 months later 😃

Actually, I ddin't get the camera as I am in France and Orange is really cheap in their homeland, they don't provide it in the package! My utilisation of the camera in the 7650 wasn't huge, so I haven't justified paying the extra for something not built in which I would never carry with me.
Built in - that'd be a different matter! (the intel smartphone, the asus, and the mitac will all have built in ones, like series 60 devices)
I'd like to see:
Who wouldnt 😃
MMC/SD
Yes, absolutely neccessary.
800*600 resolution camera
Why not 4megapixes while you are at it 😃
smaller, more quality construction
Dont get your thinking of smaller but bigger keyboard, how on earth can you do that? 😃
bluetooth that works, with headset profile
Its the drivers on the computer side that are the problem... ...Oh, with headset. Ok, that should be included.
complete rewrite of the sync application
Havent had any problems so far...
option to sync via cable
WHYYYYY???? cable, who uses cables anymore, those are so last century.
And the connections for those take up lots of space on the phone.
wap 2
Would be nice.
65k colours
As this too, but not much use though. 4096 is enough for a phone.
no weird design like the 3650: the 7650 looks great, just too thick/big now keyboard like the 6800 would be wonderful!!!
True, a 7650 is a bit too thick and maybe a bit too heavy too.
If I had all of that, I'd be back with Nokia. But the sync one is a biggie!

A few good thoughts there.

I agree on most of the counts with you Troll, except about BT,i'm so used to it,i will never buy a device that does not have bluetooth integrated.
I dont mind the size and weight of he 7650 or the communicator even.

The bluetooth one has its ups and downs. I think, without a doubt, that it is excellent for headset profile (which 7650 doesn't have) and for using the phone as a modem for a PDA or laptop. This beats IR and cable hands down, but its also not what I want: I want a phone that is good enough for occasional web use, emails, etc, but primarily needs a good syncing solution. Bluetooth, with my use of it, is not as good as a good old docking station. Plonc it down, wait half a minute, its all done. Because I don't leave bluetooth on, it is much more painful to open BT on both ends, start the sync, etc.

As for not having problems with the sync software, its a POS, or was when I had the 7650 4 months ago. It still is on the P800. Symbian needs to rewrite the sync software.

Anyway, my use of bluetooth is obviously not everyone elses, for me synchronisation is paramount, headset would be great, modem use is a low priority.

im the same

bluetooth puts the 7650 way ahead

i wouldnt buy anything without bluetooth now

i use bluetooth under xp with no problems at all

i have an ipaq and it doesnt have bluetooth, saving up to buy it for it though ! Coz, surfing the net while your taking a dump by being bluetooth networked with your pc has to be experienced?

a cable?!?!?!??!?!? why?

I have to agree with you on that one. I have both a BT adapter and a cradle(docking station), with the P800 that is, and I find it much easier to simply place it in the cradle as the PC will almost immediately recognise my P800, while with BT it will sometimes take a while. BT is still not a too stable standard, and it can be a bit of a hassle setting up a stable serial port connection!

Besides, with the P800, backup/restore will only work through USB.

For large file transfers(MP3/Ogg, MP4 etc.) I only use a memory stick reader/writer though, as it is at least 10 times faster than USB/IR/BT. 😃
