This thread included a poll: Watch TV over GPRS on 7650?

Hi everyone,

I would like to use RealOne Player to view online streaming media, more specifically news broadcasts. According to my network provider I should be able to get 30-40 Kbps over my GPRS connection (Telenor Mobil, Norway). I can play movie trailers and other clips OK, even if they are a little "choppy" sometimes.

However, when I try to watch BBC News 24 I get an error message, "Not enough network bandwidth". If I watch the stream on my PC, RealOne player there claims the stream is 34 Kbps, so it should have worked.

Anyone know how to get around this, or know of any other news broadcasts that work in RealPlayer via GPRS on the 7650? English, German, Norwegian, Swedish or Danish language shows all of interest.

(Yes, I know watching TV over GPRS is expensive, but I still want to do it. The prices just went down here anyway, so it's not so unreasonable a proposition anymore as it once was)

If you DO get that 34-40 then consider yourself a very lucky man.

I'd wager that on good networks the data rate is about 26-30, but also that most operators cannot provide more than 25.

In Finland we have Sonera beta testing a news service, in which I think the news stream is about 20 -- it seems to me that Real doesn't have proper buffering system on mobile player, like they do in Internet streaming. Hence instead of choppy playback you get the error message.

Forget real.

Grab yourself Oplayer from www.oplayo.com
Much smaller file than the Real player for your 7650.

Then go to 'oplayer online' from within oplayers menu and choose the 'Your TV' playlist.
Great news service updated 3-4 times a day.
Also checkout MagicMarkers oplyer playlist, they are great 😊

Playlists are save and contained within Oplayer too, so you don't have to keep going back to WAP sites to view the playlists..

Best 😃

Thanks. Nice program, much smaller than Real like you said. However, I couldn't find the "Your TV" playlist on oplayer online, just something called "SundaySport" and "BMG", neither of which interest me much.

Magic's playlist is indeed nice, but I'm no closer to a TV news service on my 7650... :-?

I checked with Nokia and the 7650 can do GPRS at 40 Kbps. My provider still insists I should get up to 40 Kbps with my high-speed-all-data-services-included-shazaam-de-luxe subscription (Telenor Mobil "Bedrift"😉. Not sure I believe them, even though I was able to stream several supposedly 56 Kbps movie trailers from WB and Real's showcase.

Anyone know of other around 30-35 Kbps live RealOne player video streams I could try? Any type of program, any kind of language will do (just for testing).

Here is the direct link to the playlist 😊

Start Oplayer2
Choose OPTIONS --- OPEN URL and enter this one:
http://yourtv.mobixinteractive.com/yourtv/playlist/yourtv.mvp
When it displays choose OPTIONS again and go to menu item PLAYLIST and choose SAVE.
Now you can watch a lot of clips updated at least 5 times a day from now on for free !!!
Thanks to MOBIX !!!

Best

Sorry, don't know any Real clips you could use. But I did manage to conjure a small Oplayer test playlist for you, for which there is a link in that playlist of mine. By viewing some of the clips you can get a rough estimate on how good your network actually is.

Wow! 😮

OK, now I get it. 😉

Thanks!

Got some GPRS info. Some of this cost me dearly, as I was kept on hold on the Nokia helpline at 2 per minute, only to discover that the person I talked to knew less about the 7650 than I do.

However, I managed to get some useful info from a local Nokia phone repair shop.

GPRS is based on slots. Each slot carries a theoretical bandwidth of 13.4 Kbps in the CS-2 network used here, the 7650 can use 3 slots, for a grand total of 40.2 Kbps. However, due to overhead, each slot carries only around 10 Kbps in real life conditions, giving a real maximum speed of around 30 Kbps.

Which explains my problems with playing a ~34 Kbps stream. 😞

The upcoming models from Nokia like the 6650 will be able to download at higher speeds, but will still carry over the major 7650 shortcoming: Little available memory for applications and data. The 3300 will have a 64 MB MMC, but only for MP3s and ringtones. The 6650 will only have 7 MB of non-expandable memory for applications and data. And that's about it for 2003 (according to Nokia's web site).

The P800 is starting to look good (it can use 4 GPRS slots, as well as all that expandable memory... hate the on-screen keyboard though). Getting Oplayer helped a lot though, perhaps I'll hold on to the 7650 for a while yet, at least until the P800 falls in price. Quite a bit. 😉

Thanks! Judging by whether the blue progress bar was overtaking the green buffer bar (or not), I concluded that 32 Kbps played without problems, 36 Kbps was borderline (size of green buffer headstart was down to about two thirds length by the end of the clip).

Thanks for all your help guys, this was quite instructive! And I did end up with TV on my 7650... 8)

I voted no, having in mind the nowadays GPRS costs. I'd be glad to access that service if those costs where lower.

In the T-Mobile t-zones mobile portal there u can find a link to the german n-tv live stream optmised for real player on mobile devices.
