128MB restriction - firmware or hardware?

Hey all

Just want to know if the 128mb duo max restriction (mentioned in the whitepaper) can be changed in the future by a firmware update?
Or is this a hardware spec? Maybe someone has heard/seen on the official/unofficial SE websites regarding this issue.

cheers

Well, I think no-one knows for sure, but I strongly feel it is firmware restriction. I think that once bigger Duo cards are reveiled, the firmware will be updated as well 😃

I think it is a format/hardware restriction which is why Sony released the Memory Stick Pro for bigger sizes, such as 1gb. The 256mb normal cards you can get actually have two banks of 128mb with a manual switch, i.e. you can only access one bank of 128 at a time, so I'm told. Therefore the most you will get at any one time with a Duo will be 128mb due to limitations of the format, though it may be possible to have the switch as mentioned before.

I wouldn't be so sure, will the p800's CPU be able to adress a 256 MB stick?

According to Sony's Memorystick information website the maximum size for Memorysticks is 128mb:

http://www.memorystick.org/topics/eng/aboutms/f_ms.html

So I don't think we will see anything with a larger capacity.....

As the guest mentioned, the 256mb MS is two banks of 128mb with a physical switch. Only one bank can be accessed at a time.

The MS Pro is also mentioned on the above site.

On the positive side, I've got my 128mb duo 😊

Matt.

But according to sonyw white paper on the P800, the P800 can and will have larger MS capacities for it 😊 Read on page 13.

Thanks to Viperno7 for this link. Can be found on his Multiple BT connections thread.

Am i missing something obvius here, the white paper says that the p800 has MS Word,Excel and PowerPoint pre installed.
