SE Digital Chatpen - Help.....

7 replies · 2,959 views · Started 15 May 2003

Hey.. I need to know if there are any real geeks on this forum 😃.. I just purchased an SE Chatpen dev kit.. I'm supposed to get the pen + the 3M paper + software, etc... However, I couldn't get any information out of my sales rep as to why compatibility is only limited to T68i and 2 other SE phones I believe (not P800). She was obviously not technologically inclined based on her answers. I have a T68i to test the chatpen with, but I couldn't understand what sets it apart from the P800 that it wouldn't work with it. I couldn't even get information of wether the T68i was one of the verified compatible phones or if other units were tested, but could not work. Being that these pens had been in limited production for the past couple years the P800 obviously wasn't in full swing for them to really play with. So can anyone break down any real technical differences between the T68i and P800 (besides the obvious ones). I'm guessing the BT functionality which this pen requires is what the 2 phones have in common and that the pen would require... The phone is only going to accept data from the pen via BT then transmit it over GPRS to a PC or client. She didn't even know much about the P800 which was weird.. Anywho, hoping I can get a heads up.. It's supposed to arrive by Wednesday of next week.. I can't find anyone else that's been playing with one of these digital pen to find out if they simply tried it with a P800 anyway. Kinda suck that I'll have to incur charges on my Vodophone account from the states.. Hopefully T-Mobile can jump on the bandwagon.

The SE chatpen will work fine with the P800, it simply makes a bluetooth connection to the phone and sends the text as a gif via mms. I got to use one at a SAGE conference (real geek conf) The company, Anato in sweden makes them and they are REALLY cool..

Thanks BOFH-... I just talked to another developer yesterday and he couldn't understand why it wouldn't work with the P800 either. However, this is the msg I got back from my sales contact...

"Thank you for your reply.

I'm afraid that the P800 is not compatible. We have spoken to both Anoto
and Sony Ericsson about this phone, and both have confirmed
incompatibility. The reason given is that the phone has its own stylus and
software which would conflict with the chatpen software and functionality.

Although the Chatpen is not officially supported by the P800, it has been
tested and and will work if a "patch" for the Symbian operating system
that this phone uses is installed. I am sure that we could obtain this if
required but it isn't officially supported.

The Chatpen is officially supported by the new T610 phone."

So there is an unverified patch that should allow it to work. I was kinda getting worried that I couldn't test this thing with my P800.. I post some feedback to you guys soon..

That's got to be crap hasn't it?
It doesn't make any sense at all!

It really doesn't. The people they asked probably heard the word PEN and went out on a limb assuming it was a stylus. Then again the P800 does not support the added keyboard and that would make no sense either, but it IS so.

Though I see where they are coming from, you could use the jotter and send a pic from there as a mms, but I don't see that as being very practical.. the chatpen is MUCH faster, you can print up your own paper of ANY size thus giving yourself a lot of room to make notes/drawings etc.. its not really a device for chatting so much as its a device for getting ideas across the wire to people all over the world. (since you can also send pix through email)

On a similar note, the t68i has a menu screen for accessories, if SE was to make a "patch" that gave access to that type of functionality for the chat pen, maybe tools like the Sony Ericsson Clicker would work too! 😃

So far I'm getting all my support from Anoto.. Unfortunately the SE help desk in the States will not support it because it's not launched here.. What makes matters worse the SE department in the UK is clueless as well. There's a small engineering firm that I did find that has been dabbling with this pen for quite a while that has agreed to work with me on my testing with the pen.. However, I do have to say SE is doing a poor job rolling out a keyboard of some sort for the P800.. That's why I'm hoping this pen will be the only substitute that I need.

I am afraid I have not understood properly whether you were successful in getting the Symbian patch for the P800 and configure it for an usage with the chatpen.
a friend of mine has both and he is getting mad about this possibility but cannot do anything in order to make them work together...
any hints?
