Memory stick Duo Pro

Can it be used in the P800?

Its a new standard released by Sony (great products, but wtf is up with their memory sticks?), but since the P800 is also fairly new, does it support the Pro? The Pro is suppose to go up to 32GB.

I emailed Sony but they said currently only 16MB is available and that they are busy with the 128MB one.

I know there's a 'workaround' that they have, in that you get memory sticks with a switch (128MB x 2 or 128MB x 4 = 512MB). But you have to physically switch the memory to access the other storage.

Man, this harks back to the days of IBM saying "who's going to need more than 640kb of memory, that's 10 times what they're using now"

AFAIK, there is no "MemoryStick Duo Pro". There's

1: the original MemoryStick + the read-only version of it (MemoryStick ROM)

2: the original-size MemoryStick with Sony' Open Magic Gate copyright protection technology (see http://www.openmg.com for more),

3: the smaller form-factor MemoryStick Duo (like in the P800) + the ROM version of it,

4: the original size (but larger capacity) MemoryStick with Memory Select Function (physical switch to select one of two available memory storage areas on the card), and

5: the newest (with larger capacity) MemoryStick PRO.

+ the I/O device versions of above.

A device built with hardware & drivers for the original (or Duo), cannot handle the MemoryStick PRO. (In other words, the P800 cannot take MemoryStick PRO cards).

Any device built for the MemoryStick Pro can read the older ones.

Well, I'm happily married to the Sony 'mob'!

I've got a Sony digital camera, so I can take my 128Mb memory stick duo out of my P800, slip it in its jacket and use it in my camera when the need arises. Or copy music onto my duo stick while it's in the camera and put it back in my phone - copies much faster than the sloooooow USB serial cable!!!

I don't know if Im adding anything more to this whole Memory Stick discussion, but I noticed a UK website selling P800 accessories. Check out:

Anyway, this little expansion jacket fits to the back off the phone in place of the battery cover. This jacket contains a slot at its base which appears to accept standard Memory Sticks. Perhaps even Memory Stick Pro can be used. Given the high cost of Memory Stick Duo, the option to fit an expansion jacket which allows the use of standard Memory stick is going to work out cheaper in the long run.
