I have Bluetooth working more or less properly, it won't start the connection automagically, but apart from that everything works as I would expect with the exception of backup and restore.
When I start the SE Backup program while my phone is in the cradle, all the buttons are coloured and there is a list of previous backups.
When I start it while my phone is connected through BT all the buttons are greyed out and the list of backups is empty.
My questions are:
1) can anyone backup/restore over BT?
2) does anyone know how to do it?
If it's relevant I am using an Epox BT dongle on a Windows 2000 PC with the latest drivers.
1) No.
2) It's not possible.
I think SE made it that way because Bluetooth is still not a too stable standard, the connection might get broken, so it's far safer to do it through an USB cable.
Rats, at least I know not to bother trying. It's a shame, because slow as BT is, it's quicker than the cradle, although you're right ,it's not that stable.
Thanks anyway.
(As you can see, I've changed my user name so I have the same in both allaboutsymbian and my-symbian - I hadn't checked before to see whether it was possible without being demoted to newbie again.)
Hi,
Well it may be a software limitation. I use Linux with my P800 and I regularly backup over bluetooth!
Details are on my page at http://www.fireship.f2s.com see the bit about bluenfs.
Cheers
John
The use BT for Synchronization and copying files only.
If the feature of restoring and Backup Via Bt is available , I don't prefare to do that, I don't trust the reliability of BT.
I don't like to sue the BT connection for installation of new software because if the link is broken, then you may have un needed temporary files on your p800 and it may cause troubles for re installation of the soft ware.

I think this is true, for some reason (probably Raven is right about the reliability issue) SE decided not to allow it.
I was interested in your page as I am a big fan of Linux. My most powerful machine runs Win2k and is mostly used for gaming and for applications that won't run on Linux such as the SE PC Suite. However, I use a Laptop with Linux (currently RedHat 9) on it for most of the time. I shall try this at the week-end if I have time.
Presumably you could set your Linux box to poll the P800 and effectively have an automatic connection when within BT range. This would be excellent.
