Got A 9210 - Will You Be Upgrading To A 9210i ???

This thread included a poll: Will you upgrade from a 9210 to a 9210i?

Let's make this one a poll, methinks. I am really very curious as to how many 9210 owners here are thinking of making the move to the 9210i when it becomes generally available.

I've had the opportunity to play with one, a perk of being tech journo, and have to say that nice as it is I won't be rushing to get rid of the 9210 and upgrade.

Why?

Well, essentially, I don't think Nokia have done enough with this to call it an upgrade. Sure you get that extra memory, but it is mainly eaten up with installed software anyway. And the additional software, whilst nice, can't justify the cost of an upgrade. If they had really put some thought into it and gone the whole hog with features such as a touch-screen, GPRS capability and a slightly smaller box then maybe.

Of course, if I was still a 91xx user then I wouldn't even be asking the question...

What does the rest of the group think?

[/i]

Well its nice to have someone from one of the main magazines on the group 😊

PC Pro is the one PC magazine I buy every month.

However your coverage of Symbian stuff seems to have been lacking. I can't even remember a review of the 9210

Can we take it there will be a review of the 9210i and 7650 in the near future 😉

Oh and by the way, I don't think its worth upgrading to the 9210i at the moment (but its a good device for newbies) I will wait for the rumoured 9210 successor 'Hilden'.

Andy

I don't own a 9210 so I can't realy comment on whether I would personally upgrade. What I do think though is that the upgrade makes it a bit more attractive for new users for several reasons.

The 'gimmicky' parts of the upgrade (Flash / Streaming etc.) are popular with the 'show-off' users rather than the power users (and dare i say PPC users are often in the first category). Thus I'd expect to see more people buying the device for the wow factor - for the power users it less of a big thing, and almost certainly not worth upgrading.

Not my department, I'm afraid. I am just a freelance contributing ed - writing the 'Real World' online column, some features and the odd bit of news and reviews.

There is a Real World column that covers mobile computing, and I do believe that Symbian and the 9210 have been covered there.

But thanks for the compliments, and apologies to the guv'nor for this turning into a PC Pro discussion thread 😉

Yep, I'd agree 100% there. Of course, new users might be swayed by the drop in price of 9210's on the unlocked/sim free market within a few months of the 9210i hitting the retail chain.

You can already buy 14 day return 9210's for around the £325/350 mark without too much hassle. If you happen to be in the right shop at the right time you can knock £100 off that price down the Tottenham Court Road in London.

It all rather depends on what price Nokia will push the 'i' out at. If it is more than the current deals for the vanilla 9210 then methinks they may be shooting themselves in the proverbial...

He he 😊 No problem. We are generally very relaxed about what you can and can't say in the forum (the benefits of being small I guess) and posts like this make the community what it is!

Seriously though it does raise an interesting point Symbain stuff in general has very poor coverage in the main stream press. It does suprise me given Symbian is a UK company. Compared to Palm and PPC stuff there's often not a lot of Symbian coverage.

Oh and BTW I do like PC Pro too, but the only mag that I'm aware of that covers Symbian reguarly is the Symbian World section in Computer Shopper which to be honest is appallingly inaccurate at time (and the author doesn't respond to 'helpful' e-mails...!

I'd like to know why we're still waiting for the 9210i in the UK?

People in other countries seem to have been getting them for a least a month.

Nokia have run a series of adverts for the 9210i in the Daily Telegraph (probably other papers as well) but still nothing in the shops!

Whats gone wrong?

I've just sold the 9210, so within the next 2 months, I will probably be getting a P800 (if it is as good as it looks) or a 9210i.

Main reason I'd consider the 9210i is the Web browser. I played with Opera on the 9210, and really liked it. Being able to run it withouit any memory issues would be great.

Zuber

They're selling 9210's as 9210i's here. Advertisement is all 9210i in every store but the phone's are all plain 9210 😊
I'm not going to upgrade to the 9210i it ain't worth it, still i'd love some extra memory ... . I like the 9210 and use it non stop, but i advise everybody not to buy one, the costs of the 9210 are way to high for such a gadget. Don't get me wrong I do everything with it, but the price is still much to high for what you get, but that's the same for all PDA/smartphones. I bought my 9210 for the price of an 3310, if it's destroyed i will not be able and willing to spend so much money for a new one. Better save for a laptop then ... Or let my employers buy it for me ;p

Sold.... arghh .. what kind of person are you!

Seriously though I have to admit my lust has been transferred to the P800 (wait did I really say that...)...

Having been without my 9210 for a week now, I'm getting some major withdrawal symptoms. I'm also starting to wander if I would truely be better off with a P800 or if I should stick with what I know and get a 9210i.

The more I think about it, the more I wander what am I gaining from a P800.

Gaining

- A bit shorter, will fit in trouser pocket without looking as bad.

- Faster syncronization/Wireless Syncronisation.

- Sync. of Notes. Not sure if this is correct, I think I read it somewhere. I still can't see why the Nokia does not have this.

- Camera

- MMS

- Touch Screen

- MP3 Player

- GPRS

Loosing

- keyboard

- 640 wide screen

- Full web browsing thanks to the 640 wide screen

- Did I mension that 640 wide screen

- No word processor, spreadsheet.

Thinking about it, the one thing I would really miss is that 640 wide screen. If I can wait, I will probably end up getting a P800 and switch to the Hilden when it comes out. Why the Hilden ? 640 wide screen (Hopefully).

Thinking more about it, I hear that the Hilden might use one of these edge to edge screens.
Now assuming making the device smaller would simply mean much slimmer. Otherwise the keyboard would be too small to use. That would mean they could have an 800X300 screen.

OK, I'll have to have a word with Nokia 😃 , the Hilden must have :

An 800 X 300 screen (using to edge screen).
Be same size as 9210 but much slimmer (maybe only slightly smaller in other directions otherwise keyboard would loose practicaliy)
Still be priced like the 9210 rather than extortionalty just because they could get away with it. (The most difficult bit).

That would just leave the competition dead !!!

Zuber

is 9210i now available in hk or singapore? how much the price? any review on 9210i (no, not the propaganda on 9210 and7650 made by an owner of a site specialised selling softwares of 9210 and 7650; but a review of standard journalistic like those done at padbuzz; most recently on toshoba e740).

As memory management should be better in the 9210i I am upgrading. The memory is suposed to be faster too!
I know, the 9210 it self is a great machine but I bump too much into out of memory problems. Now my 9210 is even beyond repair, the guys at Nokia don't know what to do withit now, so I am buying a new one. Found one (a 9210i) online in the Netherlands SIM free for only 811 Euro... That's even cheaper than some of the contcated 9210i...
I don't agree with Zuber though, I love the keyboard, of course the original Psion one is superior, but having a keyboard is much easier and faster than having to recognize all the characters or using a tiny virtual keyboard on screen. And my handwriting already sucks... (must be a doctor...😉

Of course the addition of GPRS and a StrongARM processor was much much better and would really boost 92xx sales... (if the price is reasonable). It will probably be included in the next edition, damn have to buy another one again... It would be great if Nokia would allow hardware upgrades...

Let's see, what does the 9210 mk 2 before I would consider upgrading...

Processor Speed

The machine really is underpowered with the 50mhz on board. There is nothing stopping a faster processor on board, without compromising the architecture. Symbain have ported ER6 OS to the StrongArm, so jumping to 206mhz shouldn;t be a problem.

Or is this the easy way to reduce power consumption? Maybe add a turbo button like old fashion 386/486sx PC's?

Dual MMC SD slot

More storage please, and the ability to use today's standards, not yesterdays.

PC Connectivity

Not ness. USB, but ditch the PsiWin clone effort and do something useful. Maybe a Palm Desktop style config usingthe emulator as a base (simlar to EpocSync and ER5 on my machine)

That should do for starters...

Indeed, 206Mhz and let's say 32mb ram 😉 That means we could play need for speed, caramaggedon and all the good old things when 206mhz was a supermachine.
Damn I dreaming away ... 😊

Good Old Things?

You mean like Jet Set Willy, Starquake, Dark Star, Chaos...

(Wildpalm anyone?)

Don't know any of them 😛
I want my old games back 😊

Mario Bros/Sonic
offroad (upside racing game (286 oldest platform I really worked with))
jazz jackrabit ;p (386)
mmmz other cool games
I had a cool kart racing game on 486, can't remember name :s

The speed of the communicator is the same as a good 386.
And still we get stupid games 😊 Give me a racer, a platform mario bros allike game 😊
The communicator can allready do so much ... (look at magic 101 game engine and wildpalms doom)

If we had the 206mhz there would really be no limit 😊

I'm confused here - I sync my 9210 with my notes (e-mail, calander, contacts).!??!?

There is nowhere for general notes to be synced (yellow ones). On PocketPC for example, you sync. with Outlook notes for example. The only thing I can think of is to use one of the todo lists for general notes and then these are then synced. It would also have been nice if the notes did not have to be kept on your main desktop.

I won't go for the 9210i. I subscribe to comments above about memory and speed. What will do it for me is Tri-band so I can use it in North America as well. How come everybody else can do Tri-band while Nokia call a top-end product "Communicator" and it won't work across the pond?
