Have any of you read this long term P800 review by Iarla Kilbane-Dawe ?
I would be interested in seeing peoples reaction to the negative points made.

At the bottom of the page they are requesting other users long term views on the P800 and any other new gadget.
Legin.
😮
He just listed the things that I already know.
Next review, please.
Long term view my a$$... Obviously this reviewer should have spent a few more weeks of use before putting his thoughts on paper. He starts off by saying how easy it is to use, and yet he hasn't figured out that he can turn it into Flight Mode when he wants the alarms to go off.
This review is a joke IMO, one of the worst I've read, not very detailed at all, suffering from a negative attitude from beginning to end, and generally a poor writing style.
And how many PDA's can fit a whole CD on the internal memory?
Sums it up quite nicely I felt. The basic idea of the article "It doesn't do what they say it does" is quite right ... it doesn't .... but it will.
Depends what sort of user you are. The "gotta-have-the-latest-phone" person ... or someone who is genuinely looking to replace a PDA and Phone and Filofax.
The author is the latter, note no reference to T9. Something that the "business" user such as me couldn't give two figs about.
Some things that are mentioned as negatives are simply lack of understanding, but overall, fairly un-biased. The MP3 player is bloody useless - I close the flip the song stops. Rubbish. Lack of "Office" style functions such as the Palm has is also not good.
Opera makes up (just - still not quite there AFAIAC) for the poor browser. Tracker / Handy day make up for the lack of a "Dashboard".
I still find the P800 frustating. But I know things will improve.
I'm with Raven here. I think that many of the problems mentioned aren't entirely true. I guess that the problem with these complex devices. Its very difficult to know everything - to become an expert etc.
I did think it was an interesting review though. It is well written compared to some I've seen and more importantly it makes critcisms. Too many review focus on the positive (and I'm not talking just P800 here).
Rafe
I read it... <fx: Ewan ducks>
Hehe...
There's always bad points, which of course should be mentioned, but the lack of balance in this review annoys me..
I think the reason most P800 reviews written has taken a more positive approach is simply because the good points far outweigh the bad ones.
This review fails to mention many of the strongest points, and has chosen to rather emphasize the bad ones, which makes it lack balance and objectivity.
"Why do they keep putting these interfaces into phones and PDAs? I've never met anyone who uses IR, though I guess Bluetooth would be handier. Wi-Fi/802.11b, as per the Tungsten C, would be useful for the places I visit."
Need anyone say more? Perhaps the most useful feature I have found is the bluetooth - in a pub, "oi mate got that number for me" "i'll bluetooth it over to you" 3secs later of we go.
"Then there's the 640x480 camera. Oh dear. Think of a web cam, a really cheap web cam that you got for 70 per cent off in a mid-season sale and you've got it about right. It's got no depth of field and near-field images are spherically distorted"
Hmmmm, sorry, didn't realise David Baily needed to replace his 10000 camera rig with a 250 phone. Camera's on phones are for playing around, go buy a P9 if you want serious photos.
I agree that the reviewer doesn't seem to be a long term user in his put down of the device. Makes me think why he got it in the first place. The fact is the P800 is an evolving beast and THE best phone i've ever had.
We just need to let SE know of our negative points and hopefully updates can fix most or be put in it's future Smartphone. Can a a phone that has this much features be anything other than a compromise? :fadein:
I've never met anyone who uses IR
And I have found the IR function lifesaving as it was the only way to transfer notes etc from my R380 phone. Its also useful if you want to use it as a modem for a laptop with IR that doesn't have GPRS or a data cable.
There's a problem if you try to phone or SMS an address book entry that has a country code in the phone number. The phone fails to strip the leading zero from the area code, so the number won't work (there's a similar problem with the Orange Smartphone). Stripping all the leading zeros out of my phone book is going to be a pain.
That doesn't make sense! If a number has no country code, no problem, but if it does, it is because you added it in yourself (in which case you should be smart enough to remove the zero - if you need to), or Outlook added it automatically in which case it is Outlook's fault, not the P800s.
The review:I liked it and I didn't.The writer was sitting on two chairs the whole time,I love it,I love it not.
It had some really bad points like the bluetooth one, what in gods(Sorry o lord,I hope you agree with me that I'm not using your name in vain) name was he talking about.Since I used a bluetooth phone I really don't think I can go back to a bluetoothless one.It was and still is a great experience.
As a potential buyer(I'm almost there with the cash) it really didn't disturb me much because I already knew about most of the p800's bad sides but it could really scare off someone who does not have a part time job cleaning up p800 dedicated forums.
I think most forum users will be as excited for you, GhostDog, when you finally do get the cash and means together to get yourself a P800. Over 2000 posts and all while without a P800! SE should send you one for free. I'll be very happy for you.
GhostDog its Stormuk (havent logged in) you wont regret the move from the 7650. All I miss is the video, and I know the developers of the latest one said 2 months so even that wont be a problem long term...
Only downer I find actually is games its the same as when I had a E125 and the compaqs came out I just cant used to this touch the screen for movement its non responsive and well pants compared to the 7650..
Stormuk
Well,i wont move to the p800,i'll keep my 7650 and get a p800 best of both worlds 😊 The touch screen might be bad for fast games(Damn SE for not releasing some kind of a joystick flip accessory),but real time strategies like Strategic Assault will work great!
It was fairly superficial. Saying he doesn't know anyone who uses IR is just weird, I've used it on every phone I've had that had an IRDA port. Bluetooth is also a must, I wouldn't buy a phone without it.
Many of the complaints are likely to be fixed by the growing body of software available for the phone. Complaining that it cannot edit excel spreadsheets out of the box is daft, neither can a Windows PC before you install a 200 piece of software.
OTOH some of the claims for the P800 are overblown. It shouldn't be sold with so little memory and the camera and MP3 player are crap.
