Hello I have been using my P800 for a week or so and I am left with a few doubts about the PC Suite.
Can I transfer a file to the phone via the USB cradle?
Can I look at the phone's storage and manage it from my computer with a file manager window or a PC suite window?
Can I do backups to my computer instead of to the phone's storage so that I have a backup of my data in case something happens to the phone?
What are the Windows applications I can synchronize the P800's address book with?
What is the P800 icon on my desktop for?
These might sound like stupid question but I hope somebody can clarify for me. Thanks.
Can I transfer a file to the phone via the USB cradle?
> if you use PC suite, you can only transfer valid media files via USB cradle. However, you can freely move any files to the memory stick duo through relevant device adapter. Then use utilities like File Manager and move files anywhere within the P800.

> I think PC Suite only allow backup and restore via a PC. I've tried full restore after my firmware upgrade. Only voice commands and internet connection setting cannot be restore. Everything else is fine.

> MS Outlook, Lotus Organiser, Lotus Notes 5.0 or below.
What is the P800 icon on my desktop for?
> Just open the media folders on your P800 and memory stick and allow you to move files between PC and your phone.
Good luck.

You say IF I use PC Suite... does this imply there is another choice?
What are valid media files? How can I transfer them?
By relevant device adaptor you mean the memory stick duo adaptor that comes in the package? How do I use that?
The P800 File Manager doesn't seem very efficient in terms of renaming, organizing in folders etc...
maybe with the PC File Manager from Epocware. PC suite only allow managing the media files. I see the Handy stuff and the PC file manager... too bad they ain't free...
Ok so I guess this is what you were referring to before... I am checking out epocware.com...
I think PC Suite only allow backup and restore via a PC. I've tried full restore after my firmware upgrade. Only voice commands and internet connection setting cannot be restore. Everything else is fine.
What I meant is if I can do the backup TO the PC because it seems like I can only backup to the phone which seems really stupid!
MS Outlook, Lotus Organiser, Lotus Notes 5.0 or below.
Any ideas if there are any developments/ports for Eudora?
Just open the media folders on your P800 and memory stick and allow you to move files between PC and your phone.
Good luck.
I am not sure how to use or plug in the memory stick and by opening the media folder I just see a list of a bunch of files... I am a little confused about this I guess...[/quote]

No

I don't know exactly what you mean, but all I can say is, that a backup of the phone is stored on the PC

Not that I heard off

Well, if you feel messy with the media files/folders, I guess you should get someone familiar with computers to give you a tutorial.

Well if I choose Backup from the PC Suite the window where I choose the label and the Comments of the Backup allows me to decide where to make the backup on and the choices I am given are "Phone Memory" and "Memory Stick" but I am not given the choice to back up on my PC and if uncheck both Phone Memory and Memory Stick the YES button is disabled...

Hey hey I am perfectly comfortable with computers but I don't see the connection between the media folders and the memory stick adaptor... I mean if I tap the Media folder and I choose the viewer I just see a bunch a files... what is so special about that?

Look, if you choose to backup the "Phone Memory" or "Memory Stick" or both, the backups are stored on your PC, NOT P800.

Exactly! You can choose WHAT you want to back up, not WHERE you want to back it up!
Ok IF you guys are right then why does the software say: "Make backup ON" as opposed to "make backup OF"? Am I delusional here? I mean it's english, SE knows english, if I read "Make backup ON phone/duo" then I interpret it like this: the backup will be made on the phone/duo. If instead it would say "make backup of phone/duo" then I would know that it makes a backup of either the phone or the duo and it makes it on the pc...

Sorry Marcnyc,
I think you need somebody to help in front of you is because you don't even understand what's in the media folders. E.g. there's only five folders under media. In AUDIO, only .mp3 files allowed; in VIDEO, only .mp4 files allowed; in IMAGES, only .jpg, .bmp ... are allowed.
PC Suite interface is exactly the same as Windows File Explorer, only with the restriction that you can't view the file and the above copying restrictions. So, if you are only comfortable with computers, you should get someone close to you to make you familiar with the Windows too.
Again, I know Windows inside out and I understand what the Media folder is very well.
My confusion was related to the sentence:
Just open the media folders on your P800 and memory stick and allow you to move files between PC and your phone.
We were talking about the duo adaptor and you mentioned the memory stick so I was confused about what the memory stick or adaptor had to do with the media folder
By using "PC Suite" via USB cradle or Infrared:
-you can only browse or move files within the MEDIA FOLDERS on your P800 and Memory Stick Duo via your PC.
By using "Memory Stick Duo Adapter" with relevant adapter (something you can purchase in Computer stores) on your PC:
-you can manage all FOLDERS and files on your Memory Stick Duo via your PC (off course, you can't manage your phone's memory in this case).
By using "FILE MANAGER" (download from my-symbian.com)
- you can manage all FOLDERS and FILES on your P800 and memory stick via YOUR PHONE.
By using "PC FILE MANAGER" (purchase from epocware)
- you can manage all FOLDERS and FILES on your P800 and memory stick via YOUR PC.
Marc - totally agree that backup menu IS confusing. It DOES imply the backup is stored ON the phone. You ar enot alone mate!
😮
Yep, when you're doing the backup, just remember to untick your 128MB memory stick duo - you can always copy your music back later!!!

Ok HOW do I do this???? I don't see the media folder anywhere on my PC!!!

Ok thanks, now I understand, you do need another piece...

Great! Thanks I didn't know there is such softare for free... I thought the Epocware was the only option. I'll check this one out right away!

Ok thank you for clearing that up. I didn't know that the FILE MANAGER and PC FILE MANAGER where different and apparently they do the same thing...
THANKS AGAIN for making things clear!

THANK YOU!!! So basically I just have to check them both if I wanna back up everything but the backup will still be on my PC, correct?
That's it mate! Tick each box (every time - as it forgets) and backup away. It is definitely stored on yer PC :P
Kingrob,
Agree that it's a big limitation that we cannot choose specific backups from the phone or memory stick.
Nevertheless, unless you don't have other data/programs on the memory stick, you might lost a lot by not backing up the memory stick.
Yet, backing up 128Mb should take forever via PC Suite.
