Handsfree Car Kit (HCA-20) and External Antenna Installation

I finally received my hands free kit. I want to clarify some wrong information I received from SE's sales department, technical support and their website. I am also posting some other information which I hope you will find helpful.

1) If you want to have an external antenna, you DO NOT NEED the handsfree kit (HCA-20). You only need the Antenna Cable (HCE-12), the Car Holder (HCH-32), and an external cable. The external antenna does not hook into the HCA-20.
2) If you want the hands free kit (HCA-20), you DO NOT NEED the Antenna Cable (HCE-12). The kit comes with the antenna cable.
3) Advanced Music Mute (HCE-16) is an add-on for the hands free kit (HCA-20). There is a yellow wire on the HCA-20 (see picture) that hooks into the HCE-16. At this time the Advanced Music Mute is NOT available. I have also not been able to get any specific information or a release date from SE sales or customer service.

To hook up a complete hands free kit you need the following:
1) Handsfree Kit (HCA-20)
2) System Cable (HCC-30)
3) Car Holder (HCH-32 if you want an external antenna or HCH-30 if an external antenna is not needed)
4) An external antenna with either a FME or a TNC connector. An antenna adapter is included in both the Handsfree Kit (HCA-20) and the Antenna Cable (HCE-12) to adapt from one connector to the other.

I hooked up the kit at my computer desk and powered it using a 12VDC power supply for an external IEEE1394 drive I have. This is what I have noticed so far:
1) It will not recognize my voice commands. The microphone distorts your voice just enough to confuse it. I will have to re-record the voice commands for the HCA-20 and then my bluetooth headset (HBH-60) probably won't work with voice commands.
2) The caller will be able to tell you are on a speakerphone. There is a little bit of sounding like you're in a tunnel but it's clear sounding.
3) The external speaker volume is quite adequate for an enclosed car. The jog dial on the phone also controls the volume on the speaker while in the holder.
4) A previous post stated that you could easily swap out the holder for a T-68i (HCH-28) with the holder for the P-800 (HCH-32). This is partially true. The connectors are the same for both holders however the system cable (HCC-30), once installed in the HCH-32, is very difficult to remove and then install in the HCH-28. The antenna cable also becomes useless with the HCH-28.

Here are a couple of pictures of my hands free kit. I have labled the connectors in one picture. I am having the kit installed tomorrow. I'll post some pictures of the installed kit later.

So all I need is the HCE 12 and the external antenna since I already have the HCH 32 😊 Atleast this clarifies things. Now my problem is where I can get the HCE12 😞 😞 😞

None of the SE dealers in the Philippines can get this for you?

Unfortunately, none 😞 Ive inquired and they just have no idea. I emailed them and they forwared me to SE Singapore 😞

I got my HCE-12 from a Ericsson service center, but i had to ask specificly for it, with it's name HCE-12 and that it is a antenna cable, but then they ordered it and it took a week or so (in Sweden). The people at the store didn't know about the cable until i told them.

And about HCA-20 and car stereo sound mute, IF you have a modern radio with a single connection for call muting, just connect the yellow cable to that and the radios built in mute function will work.

The extra mute kit (it is mounted between the car stereo and and speakers) is 2 things; first it cuts the car stereo sound of, and secondly it redirects the p800 call to the car speakers providing a better sound quality than the supplied speaker that comes with the HCA-20.

Cranium,

Why did you not go for the bluetooth one? You don't need the cradle (unless you specifically wanted the ext antenna).

I specifically wanted an external antenna. I still could have gone bluetooth with the external antenna but for the cost going wired was a much better deal. And since I had to put it in the holder anyhow, I went wired.

If I were to go bluetooth, I would not have purchased the SE bluetooth kit (HCB-30) though. A much better kit is the Parrot CK3000 Bluetooth Hands Free Car Kit. http://www.ustronics.com/ustronics/parckbluetca.html

I'll have to have the installer check to see if there is a call muting connection on my stereo.

Thanks for the info.

keep in mind that it may mute, but it doesn't necessarily use the speakers - you will need to wire the kit inbetween the stereo output and the speakers (stereo - kit - speakers). This is what the Advanced Music Mute does.
the Parrott kit you suggested has this built in.

The point of the yellow cable is to mute the car radio so you better can hear the speaker that came with the HCA-20. Of course the telephone sound will not come out thru your stereo speakers unless you have the advanced mute accessory.

I had my handsfree kit installed last week and have been using it for a week now. I have an external 2db antenna installed (will upgrade to 3db) with it. So far I'm quite pleased with the product. Installation took about 2 hours and turned out quite nice. I was contemplating purchasing the Advanced Music Mute (HCE-16) but since I am pleased with the quality coming from the speaker that came with the kit, I will probably not purchase it.

I found out that I can still use my bluetooth headset even when the phone is in the handsfree holder. This was something that SE tech support told me was not possible (one of the numerous cases SE tech support has been WRONG). If I have my headset turned on then calls will be routed to the headset. With the headset turned off then calls go through the handsfree. If I'm talking on the handsfree, I can turn on my headset and transfer the call to the headset. I can just as easily transfer the call from the headset back to the handsfree.

Voice dialing is hit and miss. With the noise of the road and the slight change in my voice over the microphone, it has been more miss than hit.

Sound quality is good for the person on the other end but they can tell that they are on a speakerphone. From within the car, sound quality is great. The volume of the speaker is controlled using the jog dial on the side of the P800.

Here are some pics of my installed Handsfree Kit.

Nice touch on the mic man! Did you really drill a hole for that? Is it that sensitive? I notice its really far from you.

Thanks.

No holes were drilled. The mic came with a pin attachment that pins it to the fabric of the roof liner to eliminate installation damage. The wire is then neatly routed and hidden behind the moulding. It is not very far from me when driving.....only about 30cm or so. The mic is very sensitive though...a passenger is also able to talk to someone on the handsfree.

I also did not drill holes in the dashboard for the phone holder. I attached the phone holder with two sided tape so that there would be no damage to the dashboard if I choose to move the holder or sell the car and remove the handsfree completely. The only holes were two small screw holes for the speaker which is mounted down low and should not be visible unless someone has their head up under the dash.
