Anti-virus for the P800...

15 replies · 4,503 views · Started 03 June 2003

Has anybody tried any of the PDA antivirus offerings from Trend PC-cillian, McAfee and others that support EPOC and Palm based PDA's?

They don't work on the P800. Anyway, the chances of someone actually writing a virus for the P800, I'd say are pretty minimal.

It's not like there's millions of people using Symbian 7, UIQ, and it's not like Symbian is a giant company trying to monopolize the handheld industry, like Windows for PC's.

Remember that a virus written for a different platform like Windows, Palm, or whatever, will have no effect on the P800. So if you were to open a virus infected e-mail on your P800 written for Windows, it will have no effect what so ever on your P800.

I agree Raven and I'm not in slightest bit worried (yet) however as the P800 grows in popularity the attraction of having-a-poke at it also grows.

More importantly, as someone who works in the IT Security industry I know only to well that someone will have a pop just to have done it; a bit like footprints in new snow.

I don't think we have anything to worry about, but was just curious if any of the current flavours worked.

Have fun...

Have you heard of any viruses for Nokia phones yet? No, me neither.

That should answer your question.

In fact I did. A long time ago there was one for the Nokia 5110. Once you received a certain kind of SMS, the "New SMS" icon was always lighted up on the main screen :robot:

I know. There is a virus for phones, that affect not only nokia but some other models too, its just an sms of code that messes up your entire phone. I remember cuz I got hit although mine was Siemens, my friend's Nokia phone got hit bad, worse. 😛 I was like whoa! I wasn't expecting that! I think there are more of these things out there.

Never lose your guard down, it may just happen. 😃

Hi KingRob,

F-Secure have, their wireless A/V product is for Pocket PC, Palm and Nokia 92xx.

I believe that their main concern is the possiblity of wireles devices infecting their parent systems; the threat being that they inadvertently circumvent the perimeter security.

Ultimately - I repeat, I'm not in the slightest bit concerned (yet). The query is sparked by curiosity; although if I'm curious about protection I'm sure someone is curious about attacking (even if they don't bother to do anything!)

Still it's got the topic rolling! cheers and God bless, The_Hog_Rider...

It would be easy for someone to write a program and wipe all your contacts or make calls without displaying it on the screen. If you can write programs for a good purpose then you can write for bad.

Just because it hasnt been done and doesnt mean it wont. I wouldn't be surprised if a virus came out for symbian 7 tommorrow, in fact I am surprised everyday that there ISNT one. A virus is just a program. I wouldn't say the chances were pretty minimal.

You are forgetting one thing; distribution. Even if someone were to make a program like that, they'd still have to figure out a smart way of getting people to install it. I don't know about other users, but I sure as hell am careful about what I install, and I always install a new app on the mem stick, never internal.

However, The_Hog_Rider has a point, and I guess it's always better to be safe rather than sorry. 😊

😮

I guess the key would be then to have a recent backup of your phone. But, if it should happen, it open a whole new can of worms.

I wonder who would then take responsibility to develop an anti-virus program for Symbian phones then? Or maybe someone will develop a virus for it and make a fortune by providing the 'cure'.

*I stand corrected about the Nokia 'virus', but it must have been REALLY isolated, because I never read about it anywhere, nor did I see any postings on web sites...

Can the program send itself over mms or email or make use of those functions? Or (I dunno how) make use of auto-setup sms in any ways?

Oh well, the best anti virus is ourselves. 😉

that particular app could probably execute a command to erase/corrupt files in 'Internal'.

I have same question, users asking about virus infested N7650 on the other forum group.

Still the same old answer with the rest of the pple who had already answered... NO WAY a window base virus can infest a symbian operating system.

We are at least SAFE for a while..... who knows if some idiot may write such a virus for symbian in near future.... who knows.....

i have an icon in unfiled in my p910i

it's like ultraMP3, but cannot be deleted

i have try to unistall, but it doest appear in install list

how to delete this icon?

Hi
I have successfully tested and used Trend anti-virus softwares on my previous Sony Ericsson P800 and on my current Sony Ericsson P910i.
and it worked quiet well on P800 and P910i even the virus list update from the mobile had no problems, and also the virus scaning was hassle free with no glinch in mobile hang or reboot.

Only problem I found was it was on a trial period of time (i.e.30 days)
and if anyone wants to try this software I recommend you uninstall it before the time period expires.

Here is the actual name and download link:
Trend Micro Mobile Security for Symbian UIQ Edition.

OR:

For Palm Based PDA's etc.. You Can Try F-Secure Mobile Anti-Virus software

😊 thats all for now.
