any FREE expenses applications for money / finances?

14 replies · 4,081 views · Started 05 June 2003

Does anybody know if there's any FREE expenses application available? I checked my-symbian with the words "money", "expenses", "expense" and "finances" and I only found three, all not free...

I don't know if it's what you're looking for but there is an app called "jabp" which I think was from freEPOC.

There is also "microcalc" which is a free Java spreadsheet app. Note: Microcalc cant export data back to Excel (AFAIK right now)

Yes, Jabp is a freeware personal finance manager for the P800. And it runs on Windows, Linux, Solaris plus other PDAs like Sharp Zaurus, iPAQ, Nokia 9210 etc. It is available from www.freepoc.org or just search for "Jabp" in My-Symbian.com.

I have been using MasterSoft Money, its not free and uses App Forge booster so all negatives so far, but on the plus side its only $14.95 and is well featured, works well, the author also takes on board suggestions and implements them, I would recommend it over jabp if its a piece of software you are going to use daily, very clear and easy to use, jabp as good as it is got uninstalled very quickly.

You can download the demo from the site to try it out.

Hello and thank you for your suggestions. I'll check out the free software but I don't wanna pay for the other because I'll be using it very rarely...
One thing I wanna ask on a different note is: why is a software using App Forge booster a bad thing?

Basically it's a way out from redeveloping the programs, instead it reformats for lack of a better term your phone to work for them. It's bulky, takes a lot of memory, causes malfunctions and crashes, slows down the phone and worst off all downloads a ton of useless files that spread out all over your system and also does what would be the symbian equivalent of spamming, that is, you want MSM money (a great program by the way) you have to download a list of all the programs and links available with Icons and programs to open them.

I love MSM money and actually bought it, but I gave up on it because of the freaking booster.

I tried MasterSoft Money myself, and it's a good program with a very nice UI. I'd encourage people to try it and see if it meets their needs. I found it did most, but not all, of the things I need in a personal finance program. But your needs might be different from mine, and it might be just right for you. You might even be prepared to put up with AppForge 😉

I just want to point out that the concept behind Jabp is a little different from some other personal finance programs. I got fed up with changing programs every time I upgraded by PDA or smartphone. I have data going back to 1993 and it's a real hassle to convert it every year or two for the latest and greatest program. I wanted to write a program that would run out-of-the-box on any Personal Java enabled device. PC, Unix, Linux, PDA, smartphone, whatever. That has meant some compromises - for example a functional, rather than a pretty, UI.

Since I wrote it for myself, I decided to release Jabp as freeware. That means I'm perfectly happy with (indeed I encourage) "competitor" programs such as MasterSoft Money. The more high quality programs, the better for all of us. If you think that MSM is worth the money, buy it. If Jabp meets your needs, use it for free with my compliments.

Hi Malbry,

Just thought I'd say that I did think Jabp was a great piece of software, the fact that I took it off my P800 has all to do with the UI and MSM being more in line with what I have used in the past than any limitations in your software, in fact there are a few quite things in Jabp that MSM could do with.

I got fed up with changing programs every time I upgraded by PDA or smartphone.

This is a big plus you pointed out about jabp (besides being free of course 😊 ) which I never picked up on (should have gave the manual a proper read  ) As someone who constantly buys new kit Maybe I need to rethink? Sacrifice the UI for portability and regain a some valueable memory on my P800.

Cheers

Malcom, I downloaded the file and the P800 said that file wasn't compatible... Did I download something wrong? Can you give me the exact URL? Thanks

The URL is

http://www.freepoc.org/download/Jabp108.zip

Unzip this file and extract JabpUIQ.zip. Inside this zip is the file

P800Jabp108.sis

which can be installed onto your P800.

Best regards,
Malcolm

Thanks, I hadn't find that file...
I installed the software and am trying to figure out how it works and how to enter expenses into an account.

So what are jRC4, jText and jZip? I had downloaded those while I was first searching for the expenses software.

To get the best from Jabp, check the manuals. There is an html and a pdf version included in the distribution file Jabp108.zip.

As for the other programs: jText is a simple text editor for the P800; jRC4 is a file encryption utility; and jZip allows you to unzip files directly on your P800.

They are all freeware.

Malcolm
