Working on a keyboard and word processor

13 replies · 3,661 views · Started 13 June 2003

Hi Guys, I had the idea the otherday to try and interface a normal PC keyboard into the P800. Then I remembered the old CHA-01 Ericsson chatboard (do a search on the net). Its about the same size as the p800

Anyway. this keyboard has a serial in/out and needs 5v power.

I'm gonna knock up a quick app to read in serial characters on the p800's serial port after the weekend. I'm looking to get in touch with some other guys with skills to write a simple Word processor, or input API.

my email is [email protected]

cheers

That is a great idea Agile!!! Maybe you'll have more luck posting it in some of the Symbian Developer forums?

That's a great idea indeed!!!!!!!! It won't work by itself, so if you could make it work, I would be very interested. So, once again, a great idea!!

But I agree, with GhostDog, you better post it in the Developpers forum, you might get more response to this...

If you go to the Symbian Forum Index page: http://allaboutsymbian.com/phpBB2/index.php ,you see a section that says: Developement 😊 There you can find 6 or 7 forums dedicated to the majority(If not all) of programing languages for the Symbian platform.

Cheers Chappies. I have posted it in the developers forum.

Gonna set to work on basic serial comms tonight. see if I can get the two devices talking.

Dunno if you've seen QuickCalc yet; it's something I've written as a spreadsheet program for the P800, still in development (see www.my-symbian.com). I'm also working on QuickWord as we speak... Problem is, they're both in MobileVB, which I'm not overly happy with, but it's all I have!

Hey si_lud, dont apologise mate, it seems you are one of the only developers out there trying to develop Excel and Word based applications. Keep it up!

I'm sure there are more people that are doing something on the Word and Excel issue,i know one more for sure develpoing a spreadsheet app in java 😉

You can find some info here: http://www.symbiandiaries.com/osfameron/

BTW:Great job si_lud.

Yeah, I've seen this before, when I was looking for a spreadsheet app and before I just thought "bugger it, I'll do my own!".

He seems to be going into some great detail about all of the various aspects of spreadsheet implementation, but I couldn't find anything to download. Plus, the J2ME implementation on the P800 has a Java console which takes up half the screen (as seen by MicroCalc, another app)!

Mine may not be the most elegant solution, but it's there and it works - and I'm happy with it! 😉

The chatboard has a different plug than the P800. How are you going to connect the two together?

Has anybody tried to persuade Symbian to open source Symbian Word and Symbian Sheet? Those are the two apps that are used on the Nokia 9210/9290 as well as the Psions. And they are really good. It would be a small effort to make them run on UIQ.

Series 60 2.0 has Word,Sheet and Chart engines,so i guess that developing those kind of apps for the 6600 will be much easier and most likely, will happen very soon.
