Switching a T-Mobile account

Hello all. First-time poster.

I have a P800 on the way to me (supposed to get here Wednesday).

I'm an existing T-Mobile customer -- I have a Sidekick -- and when the P800 gets here, I'll be calling them to get my account type switched over.

Are there any weird tricks or traps to watch out for here? Are they going to know what a P800 is when I call them, or am I about to enter tech support hell? Just fishing for advice from the trenches.

Are they able to do the switch just over the phone, or would I need to go to one of their stores for any reason?

Thanks for any advice. This looks like a great forum. I've already found a ton of useful info here.

Pop in the sim card into the P800 and you'll be up and running instantly... For internet access ask to speak to the wireless data group and they will give you the IP config numbers to add... There is a cost for the internet access. They are offering a flat rate for unlimited GPRS (pretty cheap). You'll want to jump on that option. Other then that there is no switching involved. Moreover, the P800 isn't technically supported by any Cellular companies in the States because it has not been released to them yet. But the T-Mobile internet group are familiar with it because they are the true geeks of the company... 😃 If you talk to a customer rep they will be clueless as to what you are talking about.

I've been told by various people that my Sidekick account is somehow "different" from all other T-Mobile accounts, and that putting a Sidekick SIM into any other phone will result in voice-only access. Something about data on the Sidekick being provisioned differently.

Although, now that all phones can optionally get unlimited GPRS, this may not be true any more.

But thanks for the info! I'll have to try to dig up the number for the Wireless Data Group and try your approach first. The fewer customer service reps I have to talk to, the better. 😊

Right, but there was nothing modified in your simcard.. That's the point. The sidekick is T-Mobile's only PDA/Cell phone so it requires special configurations. Sim cards don't become Sim locked or do not get modified for specific phones. The phones must adapt to the network requirements through the use of a sim card. So if you were told your sidekick was specially configured then that's all that means. Your sidekick.. Again, the internet accounts are different for T-Mos PDA cells and have different requirements then the T-Zones. However, they only carried one so it is unique in that fashion. T-Mo can not tell you that their sim card can work for any phone they do not carry. I was told the same years ago, but I have been using the same SIM card on at least 4 phones they never carried and claimed could not work with their cards simply because they never tested the phone.

The SE configurator worked for me perfectly so you don't even need to call up - T-Mobile have no idea I have a P800 and it just works.

In NYC htey have a 1 MB/month GPRS option for $2.99 which is perfect for me.

ChrispyLord, did you switch from a Sidekick, or some other phone?
