Scratched screen & general moan!

30 replies · 5,804 views · Started 23 June 2003

Having read all of your posts about screen protectors, i'm a little surprised how SE get away with charging nearly 500 for damn mobile phone with a scratch sensitive screen - knowing it WILL get scratched because that's you bloody use to work the phone!

I've only had my phone a week, and already it's covered in scratches from writing with the Stylus - what a crap piece of kit. My phone has crashed continually in just about every application, for no reason. And the camera is always playing up with the Sony Ericsson screen instead of the view finder.

I don't know how anyone can say this is a good phone. In principle the idea is brilliant, and when it works it's great - but with at least 3 crashes a day in just normal use - this is something i'd expect from Motorola! My old Nokia 7650 was far better, NEVER crashed once until the memory was full.

Has anyone had such a bad experience with this phone? Apologies for the moaning, i don't usually, i was just expecting a little more realiability from a 500 piece of kit.

Andy

Woody,

Your phone sounds defective... I have had mine for 3 months and only had it crash once (and I have heaps of apps running on it). In regards to the screen, well I left the original plastic on until I purchased a screen protector... didnt want to take any risks. As with all higher end electronical devices, you exercise reasonable care.

I would take your phone back to the retailer and get it replaced.

Good luck

Absolutely! Had mine a few months. Only one crash in all that time (imagine if Windows only crashed once in several months of 24\7). Take yours back!

As for the screen protector. It's standard that pen-based devices are sold without and you get your own if you feel you need it. Though I too felt pretty bad forking out 500 for a phone and then another 100+ for a screen protector, case and MS Duo to make it useable.

Mine crashed on me all the time too till i got the new firmware!
What version have you got on your phone!

As for the screen, needs a protector now to ways around it!
Guess they could a made a better screen.

Maybe a firmware upgrade is needed then? I am running version R1D aparentely.

I'm guessing this is a Sony Ericsson direct thing, and no doubt i'll loose all of my stuff off it (which reminds me, what exactly gets backed up using the software on the supplied CD's?)

Thanks you guys!

Woody

Yea R1D is the one that crashed alot with me.
You can do a back up, take it for the upgrade and then restore.
All you settings and contacts etc... will still be there!

All

The crashes depend of CPU use and applications running at same time,
My screen does not look to be scratched, but it looks there is a small dirty between the real screen
and the touch sensitive screen and I dont know how to get it out.

Regards

Have you tried polishing the screen?

For minor scratching, silver or brass polish will take them out,
if you are heavy handed and have deep scratches, try toothpaste but this can cloud the screen if you are agressive with it.

There was someone selling a specialist polish for the Palm that was actually very good at taking scratches out, but I don't have the link available.

Obviously some of you guys have experienced a firmware upgrade, what's involved exactly? I mean, is it a send the phone away jobby or can i get it done at an approved SE dealer or something?

And another point, i thought the battery on the 7650 was bad - two days with moderate use. I'm lucky to get a day out of this thing, just messaging! It's getting to the point where i'm regretting buying this phone - such a shame - hardware and software both look so good on it!

Thanks for your help all!

You definitely have a dud. My battery lasts four days on fairly heavy useage. A lot more on light useage. In my experience, it lasts a good 30-40% longer than the 7650.

As for firmware upgrades, they are free at SE service centers within the warranty period). But beware, they wipe your data from the phone so backup first. Although you'll still loose any voice tags and (I believe) internet settings.

Please do some searching in this forum, you'll find that all your questions(moaning) have been answered/discussed before.

Further more your comparison to the N7650 strikes me as ridiculous. I used to own a 7650 as well, and although it's a good phone, it was FAR LESS stable than my P800. And comparing battery life is even more ridiculous, you'd be lucky to get more than 1.5 days out of the 7650, whereas my P800 lasts for more than 3 FULL DAYS with average use. In my case average day to day use equals about 5-10 SMS's and phone calls a day, checking e-mails every 4 hours, browsing the web for about 15-30min, reading e-books and news for about 45-60min a day(with the light always ON), 30min of PDA use(calendar/tasks/notes etc.), 30min of music, 15-20min of games etc..

Did I mention that my firmware version is even earlier than yours?(R1B)

I have the same usage from you. But it's seem like the battery's life is as short as 7650( my old phone )...

Perhaps i have turn on my Bluetooth connection and vibrator on always?

Raven:

As you can see from my original post, i am fully aware that most of these questions have been answered before, but my opinion hasn't been expressed has it?

How can you say it's ridiculous? Just because YOU are having a better experience with YOUR P800 doesn't mean to say i cant compare. My 7650 was far better than MY P800, so it does look like i have a problem with it doesn't it?

I suppose i could say lucky you for having a better phone? Or i could ask whether you use a screensaver of any sort, or the power save mode? This may be contributing to MY problem.

Andy

PS Raven:

Why is it people like you get so annoyed that some people may post the same questions, although they've already been answered before?

Just don't reply to them!

To the rest of you helpful guys:

To put it in comparison, i charged my phone to 100% last night at 8pm. Made a 10 minute phone call, left the phone on all night with my alarm going off for 10 mins this morning, and sent about 7-8 text messages this morning - oh, and checked my Calendar. The battery is now on 68%. Literally!

What do you think? If you genuinely think it's a duff phone i'll get another one sent out, or even another battery if it comes to it. I'm only running the Matrix screensaver for 1 minute then it goes into Power Save mode.

Thanks you guys!

Andy

Battery life also depends on other factors like bluetooth, Ir, as well as strength of signal from your mobile service provider. The battery gets used up fast if you are in a place where signal is weak (since the phone has to constantly search for signal).

I would say that, unless you have Bluetooth running, IR running or REALLY bad network reception, you should get a replacement. Someone on here had similar (though I think even worse) problems with the battery running down, got a replacement model and everything was fine.

I don't have any power-save features enabled at all. The screen is always on and GPRS is always connected, checking e-mail every couple of hours. I would expect about 20% battery useage a day, maybe a bit more if I make a lot of calls or I'm using bluetooth a lot.

I find my P800 much more reliable than my old 7650, I leave it on all the time with about average usage I would say and the battery lasts up to 3 days, my 7650 was a pplay a little charge a lot phone, was lucky to get 2 days if I didn't use it at all. My P800 rarely crashes, about once every 2 months but I do turn it off / turn it on once a week, Nokia would crash at least once a week.

Still miss my finnish bricks little joystick though !!!

Woody Woodpecker,

My point was simply that if you'd bother to use the search function you would've found alot of great tips on improving battery life. Of course using a screensaver will have a negative affect on the battery, especially an animated one. Remember everytime you touch your P800 to check the time, new messages, missed calls etc. the screensaver will go off for 3 MINUTES. Just think of how many times you do that a day, and imagine how much cpu power is used to run that fancy screensaver of yours..

Further more you mentioned that you've only had the phone for one week - The type of battery used in the P800 require some(3-4) full charges/complete draining before you reach it's full capacity(sometimes even more).

And some more searching would direct you to the excellent Martin Fields Overlay Plus screen protector. If you actually managed to scratch the screen within one week you must have added quite the amount of pressure to it. I haven't used a screen protector in all my 6 months of usage -still no scratches, but I admit to being very cautious in my usage, and that's exactly why I have decided to order one of those protectors from P800er.com now so I don't have to be afraid of scratching/damaging the screen anymore.

I think you may have a duff phone.

What is your average signal strength? -- I have noticed that if the strength is low, or your phone is set to roam if your primary SP goes out, then the P800 will use stacks of power ramping its signal strength up.

Many people also noticed that the new battery died very quickly. Trick with a new one seems to be to fully charge it, then work it down to 0. After a couple of goes, it seems to pick up and retain a charge.

If neither of the above solves the problem, take it back and demand a replacement.

Thanks for your help all. Have since left my phone on charge a couple of times overnight (according to Nokia phone instructions this helps battery life, but not in the SE book!) and the Battery is significantly better. The phone has crashed less, although i sometimes still get the error where it tells you to switch it off by holding the power button for 10 seconds - a tad annoying, but hey ho!

Thanks all for your help, apologies for not posting back on here since last week - wanted to try a few things before getting back to you all.

Woody!

Could someone also tell me how to check what version of firmware I am on? I think I would need to upgrade this as I havent done anything like that since I bought the phone. How canc I find my nearest SE service centre?

Many thanks for any help you can give me.

p.s. I am a newbie to the forum but did try to search for this before asking. But 'screen+scratch' brought up some 500 results...

For a screensaver, I use the brando which gives a paper-like feel when writing with the stylus and reduces glare from the screen. However, it also reduces the clarity a little so some prefer the Martin shields (p800er.com).

To get your screen replaced or firmware upated, you need an SE service centre. Try the SE website (sonyericsson.com) to find your nearest or give them a ring. All the numbers are in the blumpf that came in the box with the phone.

To find your software version, go to the application manager (top-right icon), tap the View menu and choose system information.

A small update...

I got the screen protector...-And I absolutely hatet it!

I've never used a screen protector before, on any of my gadgets. I've always treated them with care, so I didn't really see the need for it, however after hearing so many good things about the MFOP I decided to give it try.. -On the bright side, the protector was very clear, but I found the touch screen to be far less responsive than I could ever imagine.. -It made it so much harder to write on the screen, and even as I applied the protector with care and wiped the screen clean before I applied it, it still made annoying small "watermarks"-(I don't know what to call it)..

So I decided to remove the stupid thing right away, something that proved to be somewhat of a challenge, but I finally got rid of it. Never will I use a screen protector again..

I still have a scratch-free screen though, after more than 6 months of usage, so I don't think a screen protector is really necessary as long as you don't use any excessive pressure to the screen when writing. 😊

Anyway, that's just my opinion/experience.

You cant compare 7650 with P800, P800 is so much more. Remember you have a small PC here.. And if the software is bad written, the phone crash. Same with all PC in this world. I have tested a lot af mobile phones. Most of the Nokia has gone bad. Mostly disply and bad wireing. None of the ericsson i've tested so far have had any problems. So if you use only the software on CD that came with phone, you will notce the phone works perfect. I you add lots of third party software, you will experients problems now and then.

Talking about the screen... I've usen my P800 for some month now, still not a scratch. It supprised mw how much this screen can take. I only use the stylus that came with the phone. I guess if you polish your screen it will look like new. If not your stylus must be broken or defect in some way.

Tom

Well, I think it all comes down to personl experience/opinion.
I have been using my phone with care as after waiting for it for so long, the last thing I wanted to do was damage it in some way. This is the first PDA type device I have used, so maybe I did apply too much pressure. Or maybe the stylus was faulty. But now I think I'm going to invest in a screen protector to try and prevent any more damage to my phone although probably the brando one and not the one Raven had problems with. Thanks for giving an update on the problems you had with that protector Raven 😃
Thanks for giving an update on the problems you had with that protector Raven 😃
Well, I don't think it was just because of that particular type of protector I got, I think I would probably have the same feeling using the Brando protector... Actually I think I would have an even worse experience with the Brando protector since it's a bit "thicker" and less clear compared to the MFOP..

I've realised that using a screen protector is just not for me.. :robot:

Fair enough Raven.
I suppose it depends what people prefer...

I think I'm gonna give it a go anyway :-?
