Upgrade the camera?

Do the people who have opened the phone know what the camera module is like? Would it be possible to replace it with a higher res one? i looked at a camera prog example and you can choose the res to record

You been on the dried frog pills again?

I seriously doubt that it would be feasible to rip out the camera module and replace it with, say, the optical assembly from my C50. Would be like trying to fit the engine, power train and control systems from an Abrahms tank into a VW Beetle.

I would rather think that he's beeb thinkin about the self-upgrading to P810 camera standard. I would love to have 1,3 megapixels camera instead the crappy one this built into my P800.

Besides after paying THAT kinda money for the P800 I will very p***ed off they (SE) bring another phone for the same (more or less) amount of money that will make my P800 pale in comparison.

I would expect that SE will upgrade the p800 to the p810 standard even for money (even while the guarantee last). And I would be willing to pay some but not too much - i think that 70 - 100 $ at best if they made it possible.

I dont mean put a spectacular camera system in with opticle zoom etc, just that if the CMOS sensor is a generic part (possible!) you may be able to replace it with a CCD and/or higher resolution sensor. If anyone as taken the phone apart they may be able to help. 8)

If anyone does take the phone apart -- can they take a picture of it and post it please?

You will need another camera to photograph it with of course... 😃

I believe someone did back in late Jan\early Feb. Either that, or tey posted a link to a site with pics of the insides. Worth a search though.

i got some videos of how to take it apart and rebuild it, will post some grabs. The camera does look like a standard module, so should be upgraddable, gonna look in my dads L'Espion digicam 😃

Your all crazy.

You *could* replace the camera, in the sense you could physically solder a new one to the board, but then it would need to be supported by software and BIOS, and would prob stop the camera app working until that point, minimum it wouldnt go above 640x480 without. Bear i mind that though it runs Symbian 7/UIQ 2, they are written specifically for the device and its hardware, for example specific instructions for the processor that wouldnt work on another. Its a different kettle of fish to the wintel ideal.

As for this P810 malarky, and I hesitate to post here rather than that thread, but if the P810 has a 1.3 megapixel and different mainboard to reduce size (both of which have been talked about) it would be different enough to be a completely new phone in its own right under FCC rules, in which case it would be a) impossible for SE to upgrade an existing P800 to a P810 without actually giving you a P810, therefore b) completely unfeasible.

Er.. I hate to upset you, but this is actually fairly inevitable at some point. There will be a P810 or P900 or whatever eventually. It's possible that the protracted 'debug' period the P800 went through i.e. a year+ from announcement to shelf - may mean the P800's life as top spec is relatively shorter than the norm, but is IS going to happen.

Unlss you're an absolutely rabid gadget fan, I'd stick with the P800 is if fits your requirements until you actually feel the need for something better. A slightly higher quality camera (which is still well below the spec of a digital camera you can buy for a lot less than the phone upgrade will cost) is not going to get me to shell out for an upgrade to a P810.
