a few p800 q's..

13 replies · 2,193 views · Started 02 July 2003

hey~ sorry if this is answered in FAQs or in another topic but i tried searching both on the forums and in the manual..

i have 2 burning questions.
please answer if u can.

1. How many SMS messages can you store on the phone? Can you store on MemoryStick card? And is it easy to transfer them to PC?

2. Can we use ordinary MEMORY STICKs and if so, what size? I don't seem to get a straight answer on this.. whats the 'adaptor' for?

It'd be a lot of help if you could answer these q's as I'm sure to most of you its common knowledge.

Actually final question; this is more of a personal opinion question;

Is the P800's included MemoryStickDuo card (and internal memory) enough for your needs? I plan to use P800 for contacts, picture fonebook, lots of SMS and the ocassional Mp3 (unlikely though).

Thanks
jeff.

you can store as many messages as you have memory left, but they can only be stored in the internal memory. You would have to get a 3rd party app to transfer them to your pc unless you know at commands, but it is not easy

You cannot use normal memory sticks, the adapter is so youy can use the duo in other devices.

You have about 12 mb of internal memory to use which shoul dbe enough for your needs, but you should store data intensive items, such as pictures and audio on the memory stick to be sure. All the PIM apps, contacts calender etc can only be stored in the internal memory.

Please explain what you mean by 'know the commands'?.. i can adapt quite well and I program other languages, so could you please point me in right direction? Also from your experience how many can you store without installing much stuff? 100? 200? My 3650 (with 16meg MMC) stored over 300 I'd say.

Thats a bugger.

Wicked~ Well i only plan to use CONTACTs and MESSAGEs.. is there an easy way to back them up to computer (the messages i mean)?

thanks
jeff.

Sorry for being ambiguos!

You can backup the whole device, but then you will not be able to read the messages you have backed up as they are contained in a single file along with your contacts and installed apps etc.

Without using a third party messaging app, and I dont know where to get one, the only other way I can think of is to use AT commands to talk directly to the modem in a program such as hyperterminal. I don't know how to use it myself, or even if it will work with a P800, it was just an idea! Do a search in google for sms AT commands.

Sorry can't help any further!

Thanks a heap~

I hear the software is hard to use but I hope i figure it out.

Thanks again for your help~

(to other users)
If you know a way to transfer SMS's (so they are readable on the computer) please post a link to such software or information on how-to.

The single file from the backup can be renamed to .zip then u can acces all the folders including the sms wich (where) are stored under c:\system\mail on ur p800

or u could use S&W SMS manager to back up ur sms on ur stick and export to xml file

S&W SMS manager? is it any good? and is it free?

sorry for asking so many questions...

You can download a trial version of S&W SMS Folder Manager V2.0 from here:

http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=1&jid=8E73C742F8E378764XEE1891429A6FC6&productId=69027&optionId=1_4_2&productType=2&catalog=20&txtSearch=sms+folder&sectionId=0&platformId=4

It costs $19.75 and I've tried it myself and can say it's worth it because the P800 native SMS application does not allow you to create folders.

I didn't like the S&W widget; although it lets you store folders (good), there seemed to be no way of customising the lists of entries in each, so all I got was lists of who had sent each message, not the first line as you get in the native version.

I also couldn't figure out if threading was available, which is really all I want to do.

In answer to the original post, at one point I had about 1500 messages between my in and sent boxes, with no sign of trouble. AFAIC, if you don't want to store MP3s or videos and just intend to use the P800 as a phone/PDA and occaisional "instamatic" camera, then the 16MB stick supplied would be adequate.

i use sms folder manager, but the only problem is that as my usb cradle detects the phone but doesn't launch on windows, i have to move all the sms into the general folder, and then select export to xml, the problem afterwards is that the sms aren'tin the phones internal storage folder anymore, they are infact in the sms folder manager programmes general folder and i can't find a way of moving them back to the phones sms folders, therefore they will be archived in the sms manager programme and can only be accessed via that programme

wow! 1500! sounds like a heck of a good phone~

just out of interest.. may i ask how you divide your phone's usage? i mean i plan to have about 300 phone book entries, about 30 or so with pictures.. and the rest of the memory will be either ringtones (can they be stored on MemoryStickDuo?- midi files) or somethin.

I also plan to install the Chinese pack which will supposedly enable Chinese viewing and writing.. mad. anyone got experience with the input? I'm curious to hear how accurate the handwriting recognition is.

You can store as many as your pc or memstick duo can hold.. With software called SMS Manager. That program moves your SMS's to a folder on D: drive. Then you can backup them to your computer. I have several 1000 SMS's stored that way
2. Can we use ordinary MEMORY STICKs and if so, what size? I don't seem to get a straight answer on this.. whats the 'adaptor' for?
You can use ordinary mem stick with a special jacket for P800. But the jacket will cost you 68$.
Did u even bother to read what the rest already had written ???? 😮

Yes i did, but backing up phone is not a good way.. Back up with the SMS Manager.. That is. Also i wanted to infor the user that there is no limit really to how many SMS you can store. 😃
