Knackered 9210

Is it normal for a 9210 to breakdown after just 20 months use??
I contacted Nokia Careline and was directed to a company in England, I'm in Scotland, and on speaking to them, was informed that there is a flat charge of 150 for repairs.
Should I have it repaired?? Should I buy another one (eBay)?? Should I buy a 9210i (eBay).
Or should I spend my hard earned money on another, more reliable machine from another manufacturer??
Any comments and advice would be appreciated.
David.

U have to see if u really need such a device, because it's unique in it's gendre do to the 100's of things u can do.

U have to check your wallet

I would immediatly give in my 9210 and buy a 9210i...

But it's me.

😉

Lonegunman, thanks for your interest.
My current handset is in fact the second I've had. After having the first one for about 3 or 4 months, all the call logs, (dialled calls, missed calls, received calls) stopped operating on the same day. The handset was replaced free under warranty, but my latest problem with the current handset is the same, it happened just last week, about 15/16 months after getting this second handset.
However, the problem which I originally posted about, was the fact that after competely freezing, and removing and replacing the battery, which rectified the problem on previous occasions, both sides of the communicator were blank and unuseable, which lasted for several days, untill I spent some time messing about with it, and by pressing the top blue buttons on the computer side, it finally came back to life.
With regard to some of the problems aired by others in this forum, I'm now wondering whether the 9210/9210i is in fact an expensive liability. It's all very well to say that it is a unique machine etc etc, but if it only lasts for about 18/24 months before suffering serious reliability problems, the costs involved outweigh it's uniqueness. Are we being taken for a ride by Nokia??
Regards,
David.

Humm not to sure about some of that, I'm now on my 3rd one (due to the fact I buy and fix broken one's and sell on), the other 2 I sold on to friends as there wanted them and there still going all right in fact the one I have now is coming up to being 2 years old and still going strong, I know most of the problem were software bug's on the phones which can be fixed by an upgrade, now the one thing I try not to use is after market software on the phone this can be hard but I find I have less problem's on a phone which has only the nokia software on it.

I guess nobody uses the communicator the same way, and this is where the problem is. I believe a lot of 9210' have it as an expensive gadget, hardly using anything else than the green button to answer incoming calls. Then it's like any other phone, it will last until you drop it too badly.

If its the whole packadge you are using, then be aware, this device will suffer thousands of manipulations and become everyday more and more fragile. Is it worth it ? Well, you can say no only if you heard about a more resistant device with an integrated keyboard.... 😃

Stargate, I think you've probably hit the nail on the head.
I'd like to use it as fully as possible, but I really wonder if it's up to the job for which it's advertised. Yes, it can do everything as per the advertising blurb, but for how long?

I guess my experience is a bit different. I bought the 1st 9210 available in the UK. I eventually upgraded to v4.13 and used it hard until the 9210i came on the market. It is still running without problem. Sure, the mechanical condition isn't quite what it was but that is because I have dropped it a few times and leaned on the aerial too hard.

I got the 9210i about 11 months ago and that is still working perfectly apart from some trouble with the bottom connector recently (being replaced under warranty as I write) - a problem I have never heard of anyone else having.

Contrast that with my business laptop and PC at home - both have been a right royal pain in the backside.

I'm running a few 3rd party apps on my 9210i - appman, active desk, code vault, ximplify mylist, tomtom city maps & route planner, stacker, cocktail, clock 6, sdisplay, switcher, together with Nokia add-ons - notes, converter, spell, video. The only game I have on there is bounce.

I use it pretty intensively and the only problem I get is the occasionall app shutting down unexpectedly (usually TomTom). I have formatted a couple of times - mainly to tidy up all the crap from continually loading and unloading apps to try them out.

I wouldn't buy anything from  ebay  , actually be carefull, 😮 I just got ripped off, but was lucky enough to pay by credit card so a refund was given, i'ii go for a 9210i, as the replacement ain't gonna be out for at least 6 months. 😞

Plenty for sale around the 200 mark, also check www.loot.com 😉

underneath the TEL/Messaging/Internet buttons you have a socket for connecting the flexfoil. The flexfoli ( brown thin datacable you can barly se it looking down in the crack between the keyboard and the screen) is the connection between the pda and the screen.

Pressing down gently over the three buttons will press it back into place if it is loose.

mariusa,
Yes, thats where i press to bring it back, when the screen goes blank.
Thanks for info.
