OH yes check this link out:

I've ordered mine, order yours!

😃 😃 😃 😃 😃 😃 😃 😃 😃 😃

what a sensational accessory for your 9210i!

Forget having a Sat-Nav system in your car, now you've got one in your pocket!

It looks really hot!

Do you already use mapping / route planning software on your 9210? Do you recommend any particular product?

The key to success for me will be how the GPS integrates with 3rd party mapping / route planning software. My partner is always getting lost - she has a 9210 also and this could be the answer to her prayers! 😃

Please can you give me an update when you have taken delivery and got it running?

I currently use the Alpine Sat-Nav system in my car which cost a fortune, but this GPS device is truly a bargin and one of teh best if not the best accessories for the 9210.

They say that it will be on sale in the UK at the end of August, but i doubt it will more like September, but anyway as soon as its availabel i'ii have one, they'll be a review put up on this site.

Some problems that I have with this unit.

1. Nowhere in the specification is it mentioned if external power can be applied to the unit. It will be useless if it drains your nokia battery on a long trip. This will mean that the unit can only be used for town trips and when the nokia battery is fully charged.

2. This unit is only as good as the available software. I know that TomTom is an option, but not for me. I don't stay in any of the countries covered by TomTom.

But then, if I did not already have an external gps, I would be thinking of reasons to by this. Honey, ..... we really need this. 😃

Chris

It uses the power of the 9210, but only when your using it, it will be turned on and off by the software. So it would be good (I think) on road trips. And on a 6 hours hike or so. (not exact sience, don't blaim me aftewards when stuck in a desert with birds of prey 😛 just my impression of the site)

The GPS may consume very small amounts of power. I nearly bought a wrist watch with a built in GPS facility a couple of months ago - that has nothing like the battery capability of a 9210 !

From the Nokia web site:

Q: How does the Nokia GPS Module affect my Nokia Communicator's operating time?
A: Power consumption of the GPS Module is 50 mA in active mode and 1 mA when idle. In practice, GPS can be used in tracking mode with full display brightness for more than 5 hours without additional charging.

The specifications of the NK92 is 75 mA max (continuous mode) while the Nokia GPS Module is 50 mA typical (continuous mode). Lets assume that the above quote holds for the NK92 as well.

So, if I want to use this on my yearly road trips, I will have to put it in some sort of battery saver mode, or recharge once or twice during the trip.

The Exportech NK 92 (4u2nv) and the Nokia LAM-1 (cmatthee) are different units.

Does anyone know if the Nokia LAM-1 is available yet and what the price is?

How to choose between the two?

I've read all through and I feel like posing a couple of questing before I buy the GPS unit:

1) Does anybody pocess the Expotech GPS unit, or it can be only ordered by now?
2) After buying it d'u need to make an agreement for service with some satelite provider or so? Or the thing will work any time just being connected to 9210?
3) Does it work with classic 9210 or with 9210i only?
4) Where the gps unit from Nokia can be found on the web (or bought)?

A raft of questions, but I hope ...

Thankx

The Nokia GPS module is designated LAM-1. It is available to pre-order on expansys.com. Quoted price is GBP 235.00 inc VAT. I called Expansys and they do not know when it will be available to ship.

here's the link..

The text suggests it is bundled with TomTom city maps software.

I'm no expert on this stuff, but will attempt to comment on the other questions:

a) I see no reason why this should not work with 9210e, other applications all work on it OK. I certainly hope so, my partner has 9210e while I have 9210.

b) The relevant websites claim that both GPS units mentioned above will work with both 9210 and 9210i.

c) GPS systems do not require an arrangement with satellite service provider. The positional data is transitted "for free" to anyone who can pick it up. Under extreme conditions (war, etc) the system could be turned off or a greater degree of random error dialled back in.

d) So far I've only seen the exportech NK 92 unit on their website.

As far as I know, the 9210e is just an Orange rebranded version of the 9210. Orange do that with all "their" phones. They make some claims about slightly different software, but I doubt there is anything in it. Except that the phones are locked to the network of course.

Now, if you were talking 9210i that would be different.

Zuber

We have nothing to do as wait for GPS unit to be ready for shipment...

A propos, I know only the Nokia 9210 (I have) and 9210i. But what is that 9210e?
Or is it just 9210 with a new firmware?

As Zuber says above, 9210e is a version of the 9210 sold in the UK (and maybe elsewhere) exclusively by Orange. The difference is that there are some changes on the telephone side that lock it to the Orange network only. The changes are supposed to enhance the performance/reliability of the telephone connection to the network.

One downside of this tinkering by Orange is that they usually run a version behind on the software - I don't know if Orange have started shipping with v4.13 yet - they were still on 3.54 last I heard. Orange phones can be "unlocked" on request and then work fine on other networks, so the differences cannot be significant. Having a 9210 and 9210e, I can't see any differences in functionality, so Orange seem to run the same basic firmware as everybody else.

It's clear now with orange and 9210e.

Here in Germany they just have a Nokia plant and ship communicators under its real name, although fully compatible with German networks. (And of a very low quality I wu'd say with a very wiered service if needed)

Thanx for your explanations!

Well, I was speaking (with journalist hat on, so OK to quote them here) to the powers that be at Exportech a wee while ago, and this is what they had to say about the GPS situation:

"The 9210 GPS is proving to be a nightmare: basically the manufacturer
told us to go ahead and put it on our web site in May/June, as we were
told it would soon be out: then we enquired about which s/w would be
bundled with it: we were told that the manufacturere was "talking to
TomTom" in order to develop a driver specifically for the 9210 GPS.

Having emailed the manufacturer, the distributor, Tomtom, etc etc
yougetthepicture...we are still waiting for a reply.

I am sure the product is technically excellent, but for some mysterious
reason no-one will commit to anything on what is happening - its almost
as though someone is being paid NOT to bring the product out.

Meanwhile we are accumulating orders, enquiries and export orders for
this unit: at present we have orders for over 300 units, but can do
nothing.

The rumour is that Nokia are bringing out their own product soon, if
this is the case, we will almost certainly switch our customers to this
unit.

... And that I am afraid is the sad story so far of a product which has
been incompetently handled, has failed to materialise on time, and we
are still in the dark on."

So, er, don't hold your breath over this one methinks. I suspect that the official Nokia unit will be the one that ends up shipping...

We could be in for a long wait then - as reported earlier Expansys who are taking pre-orders for the Nokia LAM-1 have no idea when they will receive stock to ship!

The 9210e is a orange network branded phone, which orange put on there own software my firmware version is 4.14 installed on 5th july 2002.
this was on a replacement handset. 😃 😃

Right, so yet again we are suffering Vapour Ware from a company. Seems to be a lot of it about for the 9210. As in all cases I think people should be very wary of ordering something when it is advertised as 'available for pre-order.' It appears that Exportech advertised in good faith, but there are companies that will take 'pre-orders' and then go out and try and find suppliers for the brand new item (or even items no longer in general production like the Revo Plus).

You could get me on my high horse again about advertising something that isn't ready, but I'm a bit calmer now (you listening Digital Red?)

I am with you on the vapour ware issue. My only comfort in this sorry mess is that Nokia seem to have a tendency to announce new technology and then take forever to get it through manufacturing and out to the point of sale - witness all the correspondence on 9210i availability. This allows me some hope that Nokia do have a concrete product in the pipeline and will get it to us eventually.

Expansys did comment to the effect that information from Nokia on when they will receive new products is poor to non-existent and I had similar feedback on other Nokia products from Carphone Warehouse and Nokia Shops in the UK (when they were still in business).

Expansys, based in Manchester in the UK, now have Nokia LAM-1 GPS modules in stock - they came in yesterday. 😃 😃 😃 I guess it wasn't vapourware after all. The link is:

The only point of uncertainty was whether the box contains the TomTom software promised on the Epansys and Nokia websites. The boxes have not even made it onto the stock shelves yet so they haven't been able to look inside one yet. They did promise to ship the software separately if it is not there.

I have ordered one - it should arrive tomorrow - so I'll post an update once I have had a look.
