Does anyone else notice the backlight of the display flashing on and off when the phone sits in the cradle? I've got my cradle sat next to one of my monitors at work and out of the corner of my eye, I see the screen light flash on and off. It's quite annoying, is this normal?

It's normal to flash unless your cradle has plug to the charger. Then the light will be ON without flashing.
I know the little green LED will flash if not plugged in and I know it will stay on whem it's charging. If you read my post I clearly mention the SCREEN BACKLIGHT, not the LED.

If you are seeing a rapid flash, then your phone is broken.
What you might see is the switch between full lighting and half lighting (which happens after about 30 seconds).
Any activity on the phone (including the internal sync with the PC) turns the light back to full power, where it will stay for a few seconds again.
This sort of activity is normal, and probably is about all [the phone designer] can do to ensure the brighter light is available when needed.
Bear in mind that your peripheral vision is specially suited to detect lighting and movement change, because that is where, a mere 80 generations or so ago, large hairy things with fangs would come from and try and eat you. 😃
I'm seeing a switch between full backlight and half back like at irregular intervals. It does it every minute or so, perhaps my PC is constantly doing things with the USB port??
What I notice istacey is very similar to what you have noticed, except I would describe it as changing between 1/4 backlight to 1/2 backlight and back again (if this makes any sense). This occurs at irregular intervals only when the P800 is docked in the docking station and charging. I assume it is because of fluctuations with electrical current going into the P800 battery, but then again I could be mistaken 8)
I'm not convinced that this is the cause, I don't think your electricity supply will fluctuate enough to cause this to happen.

Take your phone for a service, might be the circuit board that's faulty.
istacey, have you noticed it only occurs when the phone is charging... if it is not, there is no fluctuation.
I don't think there's anything wrong with it, everything else works perfectly and I think I can probably ignore it. Or at least turn it away.
Not too sure when it does it, I recall noticing that it was fully charged the other day and it was doing it though. Not sure if it does it when chargin too.
I noticed the green LED on mine flashing when i had an unread sms. I had left it on the cradle and it had arrived about 10 min before i saw the phone.
Occasionaly i get the backlight coming on with no obvious reason, but hardly ever.
