PDA/Smartphone Quarter 2 market figures.

Canalys have released the European sales figures for Q2. The figures they produce include PDA's and smartphones together so give us a good relative view of how Symbian devices are doing.

Unfortunately Symbian seems to be slipping with total share of the market dropping from 139,545 (units)21% of total market in Q2 2001 to 64,480 and 13%. Nokia's sale slipped slightly from 69,195 and 10% to 59,220 and 12% (so their market share has actually increased 😊). A lot of the total slip in Symbian sales is because Psion have effectively pulled out of the PDA market. HP now move to the top as the biggest individual PDA manufacturer largely due to including the Compaq IPAQ share. Palm remain the biggest OS supplier overall.

Canalys point out that its early days for new devices such as the 7650 and O2 XDA. As they were released late in Q2 they wont have effected the figures much. They expect these devices to have much more effect in Q3. However they treat these new devices with caution as they think they are too expensive for the mass consumer market. They also think the pricing structure for MMS is too high.

I'm not so sure about this. I think it depends on how you classify a mass market device. Expensive smartphones won't sell as much as cheap non smart ones. However I suspect the market will be much bigger than the existing PDA market! So I think Symbian's figures will improve a lot with the 7650 and hopefully P800 in Q3.

As most people will have got news of the 9210i, I suspect most would be waiting for that as well. Even if you want a 9210, the price is likely to drop. In the UK at least, I don't think the 9210i is widely available.

I did not think this was worth a new thread. The register is reporting a down fall in US PDA sales by 10%. However what is interesting is that tha article contains a couple of intersting news bits.

As many 7650's have been produced in first 6 weeks of production as the whole number of PDA's in the quarter (I assumes this is US PDA's?) 😮

I also contains good news for people in the states who are waiting for the P800. It should be availible in the 4th quarter 😃. They say it will be slightly later than europe due to more stringent testing.

I spotted that one too.

It's a much bigger pie, hence Microsofts enthusiasm/desperation to get a slice of it. The XDA, Jornada look interesting, but I can't see them getting large volumes in sales. Perhaps the Smartphones will, who knows.

Anyway, I wonder where all those people predicting doom and gloom for Symbian once Microsoft got in on the act have gone. Would they still be willing to make the same predictions 😉

Well in the Registers article about "Ipaq being a tainted brand" it mentions O2 cutting their XDA order from 100,000 to 20,000, however they say BT is picking up the other 80,000? Isn't this a bit odd as I thought O2 were an offshoot of BT, so what are they going to do with them?

Andy

Oxygen (the correct term for o2) was formerly branded BT Cellnet, which was part of BT. It was spun off and as far as I know, Cellnet became a standalone company that rebraded to Oxygen.

By doing this, Oxygen's 3g debt dissappeared from the BT Balance sheet and made the company a helluva better investemnt just when the Telco's needed a stable footing in the FTSE.

Well everyone I know calls them "O two" so perhaps the link to Oxygen is a bit to tenuous 😉. I'm always dubious about the value of a company changing its name completely. The Royal Mail's complete fiasco with the Consignia branding is the prime example. I wonder how much the branding agents got paid for O2?

Anyway I noticed that the XDA is down to 399 from 499 in most of the high street stores. Is this a sign of its massive popularity 😉 or that they are not selling as well as hoped
