they want name, fame and money......

I think that those who want to be popular use their popularity as a security blanket, a means of measuring how well they are doing in life.
Nobody wants to be a failure and nobody wants to be lonely and those who are more acutely in need of popularity can often be seen wanting to be the 'centre of attention', and get upset if someone else has something nice said about them (I'm not aware of anybody like that around here so don't think I'm pointing fingers - just observing what I've seen and what I've been). I suppose it adds to the sense of having a purpose as well.
Basically, there's a need in every human being to be loved and that need for love manifests itself through our behaviour.
I used to be awfully like this when I was younger. My insecurity was dreadful and I drove people to the the edge because I wanted to be popular. It resulted in me trying to push people out of the way if I considered them a threat and I'd get so depressed and feel terribly lonely if I felt that I was being overlooked when really all that was happening was that the world was going on and I wanted it to be all about me.
People like this are hard work! I found my solution here by realising the love that a very important person has for me and that He loves me no matter what an oaf I have turned out to be, and He'll never stop loving me. I don't need popularity (though that doesn't mean that I don't need friends).
No offence intended to anybody of a different or no faith, I'm just sharing my experience as an answer to the question; "Why do people want to be popular".
