back up problem

when i tried to back up the device, i got CANNOT ACCESS TO THE RECORDS. all other fuctions work well (such as down load softwares and restore files) any one know a solution to this?

try this - did you close all your open applications via Switcher or Task Manager? then do you backup.

fyi - i don't back up via PC Suite, i always have errors on it after a number of backups done. (both on 9210 and 9210i). i prefer backing up via an MMC reader. 😊

Whiplash,

I also have problems backing up via PC Suite. Synchronisation of contacts and agenda with MS Outlook is OK, although I sometimes lose odd bits of data. However, the general back up activity normally fails even when set for the communicator drive only.

When you use the MMC reader to back up, does this backup the Communicator as well as the MMC card?

I assume that there is some drawback with simply using the PC Suite cable link to enable drag and drop with right click in Windows Explorer?

Thanks, Tomahawk

Tomahawk:

what i do is this:

1. backup (drive c😊 inside the "File Manager"
2. remove the MMC from the 9210, then put it on a MMC reader
3. copy all files to PC

in case something happens to my 9210 or MMC, i have a latest copy of files on MMC which is drive d: (and w/c also contains latest backup of drive c😊

hope this helps. btw, it's way way much faster using MMC reader. takes less than 2 minutes to backup a half-filled 64mb MMC.

Whiplash,

That helps a lot - thanks. 😃 I've just bought 128MB MMC, so this looks like the way for me to go. I haven't come acoss MMC reader before. Approx how much are they and are they easy to get hold of? Did you buy yours online?

If you want to read several types of media then you might want to get a single combined reader. Otherwise, checkout the Zio USB readers. I used to have one, the thing I liked about the zio, is that it was so small. Plug it directly into a USB port (no cable at all) or use the supplied extension cable. The MMC reader is around the same size as 2 AA batteries.

Cool, around 25 - 30. I got mine from Maplin.

Zuber

yah, as Zuber has said there are USB type readers that supports not only MMC, but supports SD and other cards. i didn't buy it online. but pretty sure there are a lots of MMC readers sold online.

i really recommend using it to backup your files especially now you have a 128mb MMC. i'm totally not using PC suite as my backup. 😊

and they are pretty small, very convenient to use.

I have bought MMC reader as suggested and implemented the process of backing up communicator to MMC and MMC to PC via the reader. It works a treat! 68MB backup from MMC to PC took a couple of minutes. That's the end of PC Suite back up for me also.

128MB MMC seems to work fine in the 9210 and the MMC reader.

Thanks for the advice and help.

Tomahawk.

I bought from www.timasci.com

Product code is MMC128H (Hitachi chipset). Price is $120. I paid for the Fedex priority option for delivery and it arrived 2 days later.

I'm not familiar with the difference between secured type and others - can you clarify?

I think he means SD. SD is the modern mmc, it's the secure mmc, which we can't use 😊 In my country even the sales men don't know the difference, they always try to sell me the SD instead of mmc 😊

If that's the case, I have definitely got MMC. It is clearly specified on the card itself. Moreover I have transferred everything off my previous MMC card and all the applications / files work fine with the 128Mb MMC in the 9210.

Actually, I think it is a new standard or something. MMC compatible but with new pin based security or something like that. Check out

I'm not sure, but I think the secure bit can be utilised on a 9210i. Not sure, just have a vague recollection of reading it somewhere.

Zuber

Interresting Zuber, the max storage available for those secure mmc is 32mb.

Tomahawk, SD won't even fit in the 9210 😊 So you most certain have a mmc 😉

Nokia should have gave the 9210 a SD slot, they're cheaper, easier to find and go up to 512mb.

The 9210 does not have SD fair enough, perhaps SD was not established when this decision was made or something. But I still can't see why they did not just put it into the 9210i. Probably some pathetic cost saving in modifying the production line/tooling. It requires virtually no extra room, and is backwards compatible, those with MMC cards could still use them in the same slot.

Still, if you don't like what's on offer you don't have to buy it.
One more in favour of the P800 v 9210i/HP928 for my next purchase. But then Sony go one better and come out with a completely new standard storage medium, with no benafit (to the consumer) at all. Just can't win :-?

Zuber

Tomahawk: nice to know you're doing your backup via the MMC. enjoy!

Zuber: "... Probably some pathetic cost saving in modifying the production line/tooling..." --- 100% agree!
