Any good ebook reader?

31 replies · 6,855 views · Started 15 July 2003

I don't like the built-in viewer becos:

1. it tries to read the whole doc. at once, so it takes very long time if the doc is large
2. cannot add bookmark

I tried visiting mobipocket but I couldn't find even a screenshot ...

thx for any idea!

I just tried Mobipocket and I am confused again ... 😮ops:

The features are real nice, bookmark, autoscroll, and auto recgonize .txt file in the P800. However, when i tried the eNews, I got confused. When I tried to update and synchronize for the first time, nothing happened. i.e. no eNews in the device. However, when I tried the second time, everything then are in the device.

Before I was so happy, i tried to subscribe more channels. However, I can't sync the enews this time, even the old channels, and even I do a force update.

I wonder if i had mess it up so i uninstalled it from my P800. I switched off and on my P800 and u know what, as soon as the BT found my P800, web companion popup and trying to download the files to my P800 (even I didn't have mobipocket installed at that time).

What further confuses me is that I am not sure during which phase files are downloaded to the device. Even the Web Companian says that enews will be downloaded to the device next time i do a sync, I found that those enews are already that even before that.

Its a good tools, and the interface is nice and I don't wanna waste it. so, plz give some advice if u know whats happening. thx a lot!

Cheers,
SF

Hmm, that's strange, syncing e-news through the Web Companion works like a charm for me, only takes a couple of seconds. I'd suggest you check the Mobipocket site to see if you have the latest version.

Hi Raven,

do u know when exactly those enews go to P800? when u press 'update' and right after web companion prepared them? or web companion will wait until u try to sync the basic thing (contacts, mails, etc)?

I have seen both cases, so i am confused

Cheers

SonyForever,

Well, you have the option to update the e-news automatically - which means that every time you place your P800 in it's cradle, Mobipocket Web Companion will recognise it and start transfering the updated news from the sources you've selected. -You don't actually have to do anything, simply connected the P800 to your PC and Mobipocket will do the rest.

The other option, the one I'm using, is to simply right click the Mobipocket Web Companion icon and select "Update now". I sync my P800 with my laptop many times a day, so the automatical update feature gets annoying..

Cheers

IC. thx a lot! That makes it more clear now 😃

um ... hold on ... so it seems like the download 'Internet ---> PC ----> P800' is done without break (in both manual and auto mode), but i am pretty sure i seen this message before: 'enews will be downloaded to your device the next time u synchronise'. this message appear after i press 'update now' and a small web companion window popup to do some download or something. How's that?

and how web companion determine a 'update'? by comparing the image on the PC or the one in P800?
but i am pretty sure i seen this message before: 'enews will be downloaded to your device the next time u synchronise'.
That probably means your P800 isn't properly connected to your PC. What form of connection are you using(USB, IR or BT)?

I have tried both BT and USB. I am pretty sure the P800 are well connected to my PC becos I can sync other stuff without problem

more confused even

Ok, I just checked Mobipocket support, and it seems that the message you mentioned in fact should appear after the sync process between your computer and the P800 is done. And the next time you connect your P800 to the PC, you should be able to update the e-news.

Try checking Mobipocket Support or contact them if you're still having problems.

Cheers

*EDIT*
LOL, I just noticed you've been reading the same article I was referring to from the support pages.. 😃

Despite the mis-leading "enews will be download to your device next time u synchronise" message, it works fine finally (in manual mode).

But I also found that I can't delete any eBooks, eNews on P800 (nothing happens when i press delete)

Raven, ur right. enews are downloaded to device right after 'update now' (despite the above message).

I have created two channels for Hong Kong news from CR and RTHK, download the channel description file and feel free to try.

Put these files on your PC to where u install MobiPocket like this
C:\Program Files\MobiPocket.com\MobiPocket Reader\data\crnews\crnews.enews
C:\Program Files\MobiPocket.com\MobiPocket Reader\data\crnews\crnews.xsl
C:\Program Files\MobiPocket.com\MobiPocket Reader\data\rthknews\rthknews.enews
C:\Program Files\MobiPocket.com\MobiPocket Reader\data\rthknews\rthknews.xsl

Then choose 'open local enews file' at webcompanion for the above two .enews file.

Enjoy.

and Raven, thx again 😃

btw, u gotta login to see the attachment

Did you press the little book icon first? A pop up screen should appear then which will let you delete the book/news/document.

Another way to delete them is to use a file manager and go to C: or D:\Library. You might also want to check that the attributes of the book files isn't set to "Read-only".

Oh, and SonyForever, welcome to the AAS as a member, glad to have you on board. 😃

yes i did, but it never works. I installed mp reader and those doc in the memory stick. would that count?

i checked the file with file manager, they are not 'read-only' ....

btw, i just noticed that web companion start by itself to download from Internet sometimes, but then it stop and didn't transfer the enews to the device. (I am in manually mode, lol)

Nope, it shouldn't.

But you could delete the file from the file manager, right?

Weird... Strange that you're having all these problems, it's working perfectly fine for me.. 8)

The best is not to directly put the eNews files in the Mobipocket Reader/data folder.
In the .enews file, set the xml-extraction and xsl-rendering attributes to a fixed URL or folder (c:\enews\). This will be the location where the reference files will be stored (if you update them, the Web Companion will take this version instead of the local one).

This way, if you do a "Force Update", you will not loose you subscriptions.
Indeed, Web Companion deletes the "data" folder and re-generates all eNews. If you stored your reference .enews file under "data", you will loose it.

More info about Mobipocket eNews : Mobipocket Yahoo! group.

BTW : instead of choosing "open a local enews file", you can just double click on the .enews file.

mobipocket, thx for your advice.

is there more info about how to create more complex channels? so far what i did is based on some 'PDA' page. Where can i find some doc about that?

btw, can u give us an idea about the message "enews will be transfer to your device next time u synchronise"? and i notice that download from Internet and download to device happen are in two different threads.

and I can never delete a doc. when i press the delete button...

thx for ur advice

In the Yahoo! group, you will find the full eNews specification.
You can create an eNews based on an Avantgo channel, or extract some content from any location (complex website, local files, XML stream).

Web Companion has 2 phases :
- download/extract content from the Internet, build eNews files (this can be done without PDA synchronization)
- send eNews to the PDA (this can be done without connexion to the Internet).

The message you get is displayed at the end of eNews building process.
Check your Web Companion configuration is set to manual (eNews are sent on the PDA when you click on the "Update" button).

For the delete bug, the dev' team is on it.

Hi Mobipocket,

it would be great if u can point out when the full enews specification is?
I visited the yahoo group but couldn't find it 😮ops: . thx a lot!

Yahoo! group:

"Files" section/ "eNews files" directory

mobipocket,

I've been trying to join your Yahoo user group, but all I get is this error message: "We're Sorry...
The database returned error code -1654.
Please try again in a few minutes. If you continue to experience trouble, please contact our Customer Support staff at [email protected]. We apologize for this inconvenience."
hi mobipocket,

Is there a way to look at the XML after extraction? thx in adv.

SF
XML files are stored in /Program Files/Mobipocket.com/Mobipocket Reader/data/<enews_name>/ on your PC.
you can look at the XML files, but also at the .enews file (subscription) and the .xsl (rendering).

Thx Mobipocket.

I have just developed 2 channels. One of them is a Hong Kong local newspaper and the other one is yahoo Hong Kong news. Where should I post them if I wanna share with other readers?

I have yet other questions about the extraction to ask but I think I should post them at mobipocket yahoo group instead. Response there are slower though.

Thx again!

This is a good idea. You can post them in the eNews files section.

If you post your questions on Yahoo group, you may get answers from Mobipocket but also from other users who write eNews scripts.
