I have noticed a trend by ISPs to only allow sending of email when logged in via their service (or via webmail only at all other times).
I use blueyonder (in the UK) who are my broadband ISP. I can access their POP3/SMTP mail servers when online at home but when on my office network or on my P800 I can only download email from the pop3 server. When sending mail the SMTP server complains that the recipient's address is invalid!
Does anyone know of a free email service that doesn't impose this restriction so that I can download email on to my P800?
I'm not interested in webmail as I want to access email whilst offline and I would also like to use the schedule email feature.
Yeah does anyone know any servers?
Yahoo is both web and POP3\SMTP based. I access it over the web from work and via my P800 using POP3 and have scheduling enabled. Works perfectly. I did find that trying to send emails with pictures attached over dial-up would time out. But there are no such problems with GPRS. I've sent and recived e-mail of around a meg.
Thanks Bassey
It took me a while to find the pop3/smtp instructions from Yahoo but once set up it works fine.
I can now send email from my P800 for the first time in weeks. 😃
But with Yahoo I have to pay...is there any free servers?
I didn't have to pay with Yahoo.
I signed up via the account information screen.
The servers are pop.mail.yahoo.com and smtp.mail.yahoo.com
But you need to sign up first as you need an account id and a password.
Yes I did already...but can you help me with the settings....it won;t let me connect to the server...
You should always use the appropriate SMTP server for the connection you have. So, assuming you're using GPRS, whoever supplies that GPRS service will almost certainly also have an SMTP server you can use for sending mail.
For instance, with Orange, it's SMTP.ORANGE.NET
The SMTP server doesn't care what email address you're sending the mail from, or to, just that you are a valid user of the service.
My settings for e-mail in the P800 are as follows;
Basic:
Account Name :- Yahoo
Your Name :- My Name
Email Address :- my full yahoo email address
Connectio type:- POP3
Internet Account :- My GPRS internet Account
(Though it works fine with dial-up as well)
Inbox:
Username :- My Yahoo user name
Password :- My Yahoo password
Incoming server :- pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk
Download:- Just headers
Outbox:
Outgoing address:- smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk
Use SMTP Authentication - Yes
Use Inbox login details - Yes
Advanced:
Secure Connection - No
Outgoing mail port :- 25
Use MIME Encoding - Yes
Incoming Mail port :- 110
Secure Password authentication - No
A lot of SMTP servers do require authentication. Yahoo does as does Vodafone (who are my GPRS provider).
Settings for Yahoo ...
Account name: whatever you like
Your name: difficult one this!
Email address: mine is [email protected] (some will end @yahoo.com)
Connection type: POP3
Internet account: preferred (or whatever you like)
User name: mine is howad0
Password: *******
Incoming server address: pop.mail.yahoo.com
Download: I've set this to no restrictions
Outgoing server address: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Use SMTP authentication: yes
Use Inbox login details: yes
Hope this helps Anthony.
I also have the settings for Vodafone (UK) mail if anyone is interested. This one can be configured to send a text when a new email is received.

Alledgedly, so too can Yahoo, but I've never managed to get it working. I suspect it just doesn't work for mobiles on the Manx Telecom network.
Ahhh! The cost of isolation 😃
