what memory card?

22 replies · 3,021 views · Started 25 July 2003

I heard that the p800 can take other forms of media, is this ture? The sony branded one seems very expensive, what media has been tried and tested on the p800?

As it is, the P800 only takes Memory Stick Duo's - with or without the Mgic Gate technology.

However, you can buy a special "Jacket" that allows you to use standard Sony Memory Stick's with the phone.

You can see it here http://www.expansys.com/accessory.asp?code=P800&atype=Expansion

although i must admit it does make the phone formidably chunkier, but then again 128 mmc's are only 25-30 quid

umm picture is difficult to see but does it make the battery section bigger? Whats magic gate technology about?

i just took a look on ebay, the memory stick was around 60 😞 Is there anywhere i can get this cheaper from? Maybe online shop or something? Also what is a:

Memory stick duo convertor

Ah, the joys of the messed up sony memory card saga!

60 is a pretty good price for 128MB MS Duo. 70ish seems to be standard on-line in the UK.

Yes the jacket does add some width to the battery cover. I think there are some details on p800er.com. Plus a larger photo.

Magic Gate is a Sony Music Encrytion thingy. If you use a magic gate compatible digital music player and memory, it puts restrictions on copying verified ATRAC music files onto the device. Or, in simple terms, don't worry about it. They work in the P800 without restrictions as the phone itself isn't Magic Gate compatible (they're the white one's, normal one's are blue).

Memroy Stick duo converter is a Memory Stick sized device. You can plug an MS Duo into it and then put the whole lot into a standard Memory Stick slot. So, it just allows you to use a MS Duo in a standard MS device.

Fun this, innit?

whats the cheapest place to get a 128meg card from? Im thinking of something like from USA as i would guess it would be alot more cheaper

www.expansys.com (it's in manchester) so if you wanna save postage, drive their 😃 though you should only do that in your company car with company supplied gas

heres the direct link:

ic, not a bad price i guess, cant drive there looks like postage unless if i can find something on somewhere like ebay, will this magic gate thing effect me in any way if i use downloaded mp3s?

... Expansys don't have any 128Mb Duos, say they haven't had any at all yet, and don't know when they will...

So has ANYONE actually bought one in the UK?

Plenty of places (claim) to have them in stock. If you do a search on "Memory Stick Duo" in Yahoo and limit your search to UK sites only there are a few listings in there. I noticed Amazon.co.uk have a few available via priate auction (currently at 60-ish but an 80 bid will end the auction in your favour).

They are out there is you look really REALLY hard (and are prepared to pay through the nose!)

I'm about to buy a 128MB Memory Duo Stick and am doing it through Brando. Website link: http://shop.brando.com.hk/memorystickduo.php

Its $103 including postage which works out at 64 which is cheaper and considering that Expansys are out of stock, its probably you're best bet.

But I remember this all being discussed when I joined the forum only a few weeks back so if you do a search as suggested I'm sure you will find more info and other people's experience of buying from both companies.

Hope this helps ceanth 8)

nice, thanks gambit83, im going to take a trip into central london and find out if p800 can take genertic card, like imitation memory cards, my friend suggested it to me, ill keep everyone posted on it.

I'm talking about REALLY having them in stock.

I can't see anyone in any of the threads here saying that they have actually bought one from anywhere in the UK...

I'm quite capable of doing a search to see which sites claim they have them 😊

Well, Mobile Fun have them in stock for immeadiate dispate. And if you reckon paying 105 is worth getting one now from the UK then good luck to you!

I'll stick to buying them from Asia at two thirds the price and waiting a week!

Actually changed my mind ceanth. Ended up ordering it from P800er as I also ordered a overlay plus screen protector.

I'm from the UK woozle and just ordered the memory stick from them. I asked for the standard postage which can take up a few weeks, but you can choose FedEx which means you will get it in a few days, however you obviously have to pay slightly more for that option...

I will post back when I have received my order 😃

Slight Warning. Ordering from them using FedEx means you'll get charged Taxes on import to the UK. Using standard post (I've ordered from them twice, both times it's only taken 5 working days) seems to get around that!
