New: Vexed from FreEPOC for 92x0, excellent puzzle game

It's here - Vexed for the 9210 has arrived. FreEPOC bring you a challenging (and frustrating) puzzle game. A big hit on ER5 it is certain to be one of the most popular games for the 9210 and best of all it is free!

FreEPOC Intro
Vexed has been a monster hit on the Psion platform, and now FreEPOC are taking you into the next level of infuriating puzzles. With over 500 levels, you can join the continuing adventures of Sekushi Dianno as she journeys through the wastes of the Middle East after the elusive trophy of Puzznic...

Puzznic talked of riddles of evil cunning and whole rooms controlled by the movement of giant tiles, doors with intricate mechanisms, lethal boobytraps. My health is failing me and I will not live long enough to try and recover the treasures, find all the tombs and unlock their secrets.

Improvements
It may look the same as the first Er5 version, but Vexed now has some subtle improvements. These include an undo feature the ability to see how many of each block type are in each level, and the ability to hide all bar one block so you can see just how far the last 2 circles have to move to meet each other!

Vexed also now comes bundled with a "Level Solution Generator." Simply admit defeat by emailing FreEPOC, and by return email we'll send you a code to enter into Vexed. You'll be shown the solution, and taken to the next (probably much harder) level - but you'll forever remember the day Vexed beat you, even if nobody else does.

What people say about it:
"Vexed is an awesome game... you won't be able to put it down."
"Probably the most enjoyable piece of leisure software since Jumpy."
"Bloody frustrating... I could kill the author if I get my hands on him."
"It's like a thinking persons Tetris."

Go and download it now...

I got stuck on level 2 for too long 😮ops:

But I'm Ok now. This is a top game! It remembers where you were when you last exited and all sorts. Really well worth a download - the price is just excellent and appeals to the Yorkshire blood that flows through me!

Tanker,

Thanks for your comments regarding Vexed. As to all the little touches, such as remembering where you are when you exit (and in each seperate level pack when I release them for another 500 levels) it's all part of making a responsible application.

Heck the app notes where you've solved to after every level completed just on the off chance that the game crashes. The original ER5 version had a bug ifyou solved 35 levels in a row, it would crash. Luckily it remembered your place otherwise the first downloaders would have got very annoyed at me...

Anyway, if you enjoy Vexed (and the price) remember to let everyone know, and you could always ask if there are any other ways you can help FreEPOC.

(Oh and wait till you see level 30, you have been warned 😉 )

Well done, this is a great little puzzle game 😃

I'm already, dreading getting to level 30 😉

Keep up the good work and extra levels.

Andy

There is a level pack called "Confusion" which makes Level 30 look like level 2. Which should cause a cardiac arrest for Tanker, and fear in others...

Hi Ewan,

I just tried to move from level 58 to 59, unfortunately Vexed crashed.
Reason code is E32USER-CBase and reason number 46. I can't even start the game anymore, if I push any button after the start-up picture it crashes again. 😞
Any idea?

Regards,

Tilman

That'll be becasue this first pack only has 58 levels.

Oops :-?

Easily cured though. Go into the c:\system\apps\vexed and delete savegamea.ini file. You'll loose your progress but be taken back into the game at level 1. Will fix this bug over the weekend

I *think* I've found this bug, but don;t ave time to extensivly test, so I've added a small update (to v1.01( which should cure it). Pop along to FreEPOC to get it.

Your update worked! Now I can play level 58 over and over again 😃
Can't wait to get a new level pack! 😉

Regards,

Tilman

Thanks, the first level pack (probably 3-4 more levels) is tentativly pencilled in for release in 1-2 weeks depending on other projects.

Don;t you just love the "Hobby Programmer" who can come up with... Tricky... I'll fix it by Tuesday rather than having to find the right person in a big Software House who'll actually give you a straight answer.

Isn't "hobby programmer" a bit too modest 😉
FreEPOC simply rocks! Keep up the good work.

Tilman

P.S. Since I'm now on vacation, maybe I have some time to get more into OPL myself 😊 My family might not be so happy about this 😮ops:

Ewan

Out of interest how hard is to write new levels for Vexed? How long will it take you to convert the 300-400 you have on the ER5 version?

Rafe

The 3-400 levels from ER5 should be available in the next 3-4 weeks. The questio you should really be asking is:

"If Ewan is telling us these will be out soon, is he still working on them, or are they ready to go and he's just spinning it out for some other nefarious reason?"

No, "Hobby Programmer" is exactly the way to describe us. FreEPOC is really a lot of individuals, working at their own speed and pace, with no big goals other than doing stuff that that individual likes. Look at how I seemto do a lot of logic games, while Malcolm Bryant concentrates on stuff he needs for work (ABP, EpocSYNC, vCal, etc).

When the Series 3a was about, there were hundreds of hobbyists out there with small websites and small but useful apps andf games. The SSeries 5 kinda lost all that because a lot of big "shareware houses" came along and gave the impression that OPL was bloody difficult.

It's not! FreEPOC was set up partly to try and show that it was easy to program, and that free software could be of the highest quality if people worked together and had fun!

Perhaps I should do some OPL lessons for on the board...

I know that FreEpoc is more than you. I use a lot of "your" programmes for my Series 7 and as the amount is increasing as well for the 9210. Simply because there are useful and I need them every day like ABP.

Talking about lessons, would it be possible to integrate some OPL lessons on this site.
Rafe, Ewan what do you think? If people really see that OPL is easy, hopefully some more people are starting to experiment with it. How about some weekly lesson like the OPL tutorial of Steve Litchfield (http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/opl16index.htm).

Let's share the fun! 😃

Tilman
