Were you able to write down the complete error message?

Not a particularly graceful way that the software is saying it, but 0xC00000005 = access denied, which would mean that some required file (or other resource) has security settings preventing access to it.

If you run Windows XP Home edition, then there is no user interface to change it (Windows XP Professional has it in Explorer & the Event Viewer, with appropriate logging settings, can be used to detect what file is protected so that it cannot be accessed). If that's the root cause of your problem, that is. 😉

Not that I'm not grateful for your help, you're the first people to respond to this message which I've posted on numerous boards, but I am running XP Home, and I'd like very much for there to be a solution. Any help would be great.

Thanks again.

I don't know if there's an Event Viewer on Windows XP Home to see what file, if any, causes trouble, but there's a command line utility called XCACLS.EXE that is in the Windows Resource Kit, which can be used to change file protection (Access Control Lists).

If you can find XCACLS somewhere then...
