I know this is an extreme long shot, but would there ever be an application that checks the current temperature's surroundings?

It's technically possible. I did have a bash at such an application a long time ago, but I never finished it. The way it would work is by reporting the battery temperature, so of course it wouldn't be entirely accurate, but it would be reasonable I should imagine.
