There have been rumours flying around for a while about what Sony Ericsson are planning to replace the P800, but nothing has been confirmed by them.
The French arm of the UK mobile network operator Orange have published technical specifications of a phone they list as the Sony Ericsson P810, confirming the rumours that the new handset will be named either P810 or P900. http://touslesmobiles.orange.fr/177.asp for the French specs.
There don't seem to be many considerable differences in this new handset, screen resolution remains the same and the dimensions of the case are very similar. However, there's a suggestion that it may be running Symbian OS8.0. The French site lists the release date as October 1st 2003, but http://www.infosyncworld.com reports that Orange officials have refused to comment on the accuracy of the Orange France website.
In the Java version field it says 1.0, but since it is running UIQ 2.1 shouldn't this be 2.0? If this is true I don't know if you can trust these numbers to be facts.
The whole thing is a little tenuous, but I think there's a lot of fact mixed in with the fiction. I don't think the release date will be accurate, and as you say a few of the version numbers don't add up, but I think in general this is about as accurate as is possible to get with Sony Ericsson and Orange keeping very quiet about the new phone.
Lol, this is just BS. There's no 'Symbian v.8.0', the newest version of the Symbian OS is 7.0s, and the newest version of UIQ (v.2.1) will support Java MIDP v.2.0.
Seems like Orange France is just guessing on the features, and even doing a poor job at that.
The suggstion of Symbian OS8.0 came from a source inside Symbian... it's not confirmed though
Fair enough. It's likely I guess that Symbian is working on another update, but why a 8.0 version and not 7.x...? The leap from 7.0 to 8.0 would imply some major changes..
The existance of Symbian 8.0 could be true.Symbian 7.0s was finished long time before its announcement.Whether the p800 successor will be powered buy it,i don't have a clue.
Version 8 of the OS was roadmapped at Exposium as being complete in 2003 but that products would be rolling out 2004.
Several developers have received early versions of the P810 and the ones I have spoken to are impressed.
Conclusion, release date is probably reasonably accurate - but its probably not V8.0
Screen resolution remains the same ? Says who ? The P800's screen is 4k .. the site says 65k for the P810.

The case dimensions and weight are slightly different, but not significantly, so it would seem there won't be huge external changes. I could be wrong though!
WizeGuy, if you've spoken to developers who have the P810, any chance of getting more info, and perhaps pictures? They're probably under NDA, but if not.... 😉
JadeViper - yes these guys are all under NDA - and it certainly wouldn't be worth their while to say any more I'm afraid
Ahh well, it was worth a try 😊
