Have you been blasted?

This thread included a poll: have you been MSBlasted?

I've lost count of how many people in work have come into the office and asked me what I can do to help their computer at home because it keeps rebooting itself when they connect to the internet.

I've never seen such widespread effect of a virus among my friends and colleagues. But it would seem that this MSBlaster is a particularly virulent one and has hit the home user particularly hard.

Is this a lesson that home users should treat Anti-Virus software as they would car insurance? Is a firewall as obligatory as a seatbelt?

Have you been stung?

Yep, indeed I have. And so have had several others in my department at the university. We all have antivirus software running but it did not stop the virus from spreading through the intranet. The AV-software company did make a very useful removal tool though, so the problem was relatively easy to solve. Exept that some of my collegues needed extra help: for instance one got as fas as dowloading the removal tool zip-file, and unzipping it, but she then did not realise she needed to click the exe-file once more to actually run it... She could not understand why nothing happened...

In fact this has been a major problem in Finland. Several banks closed yesterday because of computer crashes. So it's not just careless home-users that have been infected.

no....i have disable the sharing mode of my pc on internet...
that's why it not hit my pc......

It did hit me,but i figured it out after 5 minutes.I just switched RPC to "take no action" and downloaded a fix from microsoft.

BTW:I don't think it has anything to do with sharing.

I think we've just been very lucky. We don't have much in the way of AV and other security. But then, we don't have home contents insurance either.
