Voicemail number with # character

When I choose Voice Mail under phone preferences, I would like to add a 4 digit number and a "#" character afterwards as once I dial my voicemail, it asks for a password and then I must press the # key.

If I insert this, I get an error when dialling voicemail - it just stops!
How can I do this?
Also... how do I restore the default Voicemail number to Shortcut 1 on the keypad?

Don't you need to insert a pause after the number and before the # key? I seem to remember this is in the manual, but don't have it with me at the mo. If you don't put a pause in, it treats the # as part of the number it dials which gives you the error.
