Am trying out WorldMate and it seems the only way to connect is through GPRS. Anyone in the UK on Orange have an idea as to how much it would costs each time to connnect and update the weather/currencies database(s)?
Have OpenAcess WAP for free for 3 months but don't think that will cover it to connect to get the updates.
Any advice appreciated!
The access pack allows you 10Mb of GPRS a month so will easily cover it! 😃
What access pack? Is that the free GPRS WAP one? Does that mean its free to access 10mb WAP sites over a GPRS connection each month or just over a normal WAP connection at 9.6kbps....
I'm sure I accessed a standard internet, non WAP site the other day over the GPRS Wap connection I have on my phone, so does that mean I can access all the internet sites I want within this free 10mb limit?
Any help please as I'm just starting to confuse myself I think.... :-?
The Access Pack is for WAP only, although you're able to use Orange GPRS WAP. The problem comes when you try to access non-WAP info, which just doesn't work - presumably it's going through a WAP gateway, preventing normal data transmission. All the programs I use which require GPRS updates have to be done via normal GPRS access, but since you only pay for data transferred this costs just a few pence. I don't know much about worldmate so can't be specific, but if it requires frequent or lengthy downloads it could prove expensive.
Thanks Muppet, thats cleared me up a bit, though I'm fairly sure I've connected to things like Streetmap which definitely isn't Wap, over the GPRS Wap account I've got on my phone. I guess I'll have to wait until the end of the month to see if I'm getting charged for it by Orange (hopefully shouldn't do)
Yes, definitely check your statement - you could easily have the GPRS active and be running up a bill!
I speak from personal experience, because when I got the phone and was messing with the settings I put HSCSD (High Speed Data) on and whacked about 13 onto my orange bill - despite the customer support swearing blind that HSCSD wouldn't even work!
BTW: I've just seen Orange's roadmap for the next few months, and they list a "Sony Ericsson P900" for next year, so maybe the P810 won't appear after all...
Just do what i do!
I generally browse using the internal browser via gprs-wap (i have the package on orange) and on the sites which don't load properly (usually graphically orientated sites) i use opera via gprs.
More hastle but alot cheaper
droolian
That's exactly what I do too!!! Keeps it nice and simple, no need to worry that bookmarks for WAP or normal internet sites are getting mixed up between the two different browsers..... 😃
