Yesterday, I managed to delete c:/system from my phone.
Clever eh?
The problems that I have now is that I can't create any new SMS's, or open the ones that I receive - I can see them in my inbox, and see the first few words of the message.
I don't appear to have lost any other data, other than the background picture. All my phone contacts and photos are still here, and I can make and receive calls as normal.
How can I sort out the SMS problem?
One advice, don't restart or shutdown your phone, because it might not start up.You can't fix the SMS things, you will need to do a hard reset: *#7370# .If you dicide to to this, don't blame me if something goes wrong, you are doing in on your own risk,if that doesn't work,a trip to the nearest NSC will fix it.
I hope you have made a backup.
What a mess! You better be careful next time!!

Thanks a lot.
Use the phone's built-in "Memory" app to back up to a memory card (see the obvious choice in "Options"😉.
To back up to a PC, you need to use Nokia PC Suite over infrared or Bluetooth. It has a backup feature. By default it doesn't back up quite everything (see the BackupExclusionList.dat in the PC Suite installation directory for what's not).
