Hi Folks
I recently got a new P800 (after smashing the screen on my last one!) with the new firmware.
Since then I have been having issues with my phone crashing several times a day - sometimes it crashes properly and requires a soft reset flashing triangle sign) but other times the screen and the whole device just freezes and nothing works escept taking the battery out or pressing the off button for 10 seconds.
It even freezes whilst charging! So it's difficult to charge the phone (I have to keep checking tihasn't crashed!) 😞
When this happens I can't turn the phone back on again! Repeatedly pressing the on button or holding the on button down doesn't work! Sometimes taking the battery out does - I get a little vibrate and then press on again and it comes back.
I did have my memory stick fully loaded to 99% (Internal memory has never been above 70%) - I've deleted some stuff and unistalled some apps but it hasn't helped.
But this is worrying as my P800 is very unstable! :-?
Anybody else come across anything similar?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
😉
Cheers
Jago
My phone has gone thru exactly what you're describing over the past week until today when it has completely died and even taking the battery won't fix it....
Left it on charge overnight last wednesday....woke up for work at 11.45.... four hours late, after the phone had crashed/wouldn't respond (my alarm to wake up is on my phone, doh!)
Since then i've had to recharge it each night, unplug it when leaving the house each morning at 8am and it will have completely discharged by the time I go to bed at 11pm, even if I haven't made a single call and with no other apps running.
Today i was making a call to Orange to see how many inutes I have remaining when it just went to the black screen again and wouldn't respond, not even the yellow triangle tho I could still hear the voice at the other end of the call!
I'm lost without my phone, argh!!! 😞 Luckily I think I did a back up about a week ago, phew! 8)
Will try and get to a phone shop in next few days, hopefully this is covered in the warranty (there is a warranty right?!!!) it's certainly not wear and tear anyways.....
Do a format, of both internal and external memory.
Internal: Jog dial UP - * - DOWN - DOWN - * DOWN - * (Do this in FLIP CLOSED mode and turn the jog dial only ONE NOTCH at a time)
External: Control panel - Format disk
Oh yeah, and you will lose everything so it's wise to have a back-up at hand before formatting, but at least this should remedy your P800.
There's also loads of info in this forum about this issue as well as anything else concerning Symbian phones, so a Search is always your best bet! 😉
Cheers Raven, I guess that info is for Jago? I knew about the format but the phone won't actually even switch on to be able to get in and do a format now.....i'll see what happens when i get home and plug the recharger back in again, it may work for a limited time again.....
Yes, that was meant for Jago. Sorry to hear about your dead phone Jonomac, guess a trip to the service centre is your only option. Have you tried removing the battery for a while?
I had the same problem and sent the phone in to Sony Repair (I hadn't read about resetting or reformatting at the time) they promised to repair or replace the phone in six days -- it has now been 30 days! They claim they are out of stock of P800s!
Trying the battery trick now... not sure how this will work but hey I'll try anything at the minute! Am heading down to an Orange shop this afternoon.
It wouldnt be quite so bad if I could just swap sim's into another phone but it doesn't have any of my numbers saved onto it (I suppose thats what comes of having a flash phone where you can store numbers on the external memory!!!)
And 30 days???? Holy Moley!!! I can't do without it for that long!!!
Ive had the same problem as well. :x The phone has crashed hard twice...not to mention the few times the 10 second yellow triangle thingy has appeared. I kept turning on/off the phone and taking the battery out several times 😮 . How annoying...after giving up and letting it sit for 30 min, i can usually turn it on again, the phone gives me a message(cant remember exactly) the memory is corrupt and will reformat the internal memory. I bet its a lot easier doing the - up * down thing but does it work when u cant get your phone to turn on?? oh well....

Nope, unfurtunately not.
It's usually the users own fault when this thing happens though, by filling up the internal memory, messing with the file system or installing some bad quality software etc. It's always wise to keep at least 3megs or so of free memory on the C: drive.
My P800 never crashes, and that's because I install all (most) of my programs on D:, close unused apps, reboot regulary and keep 4-5megs of free memory on C: at all times.
Neglectful usage will ALWAYS cause problems on devices like this. As long as you are careful and follow some simple, basic steps like not filling up the C: memory you shouldn't face any major problems.
In fact the P800 is one of the most stable devices I've encountered. Try using any M$ device and you'll know what I'm talking about... 😉 :P
Getting sorted out in carphone warehouse, oxford street (argh!) as we speak... got varying days to reinstall/reformat the phone given to me from 1 day to 4 at different stores.... hopefully get it tonight (yeah right!)
also memory wise, yes I'm responsible for keeping way too much on my internal memory... i won't in future!!!
Thanks for the tips Raven
Unfortunately my phone died on Thursday night
Luckily just after I made a backup
It just would not turn on again even after taking the battery out and other usual tricks.
I got it replaced through Orange insurance, restored everything and then uninstalled a few apps, but still had a few crashes. On Saturday I uninstalled MGS Karting and decompressed all my previously compressed apps (but haven't uninstalled Stacker).
Has anyone else had problems with MGS Karting?
If not could it have been an app that wasn't meant to be compressed (and therefore not able to run in the background)?
Haven't had any problems since the weekend so hopefully it may be sorted!
(Good luck Jonomac!)
Cheers
