Taking apart P800, need help. (long post) *Added Emergency*

Ok so I went and ordered a nice Mineral Grey case for my P800 (From global mobility), and tonight I set about trying to fit it since my original blue housing is scratched in many places http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9398&highlight=

Anyway, I managed to get off the first 4 screws and eventually get the case open, but I think the headphone socket broke off. Does anyone know if its supposed to be soldered onto the contacts or is supposed to be loose inside and held in place by the top casing.

Annoyingly now that its all open, theres 2 more even smaller screws, one of which I managed to get off with a very small flathead screw driver, the other isn't moving so i'm gonna have to find a star shaped one FOR ONE SCREW. Does anyone know what number/kind of screw the tiny little ones are that hold the circuit board in place? (they are smaller than the ones that hold the back on)

Theres this orange cable too thats hanging around it looks like its supposed to be clipped on somewhere?

And the metal contacts behind the internet and camera buttons which way up is it supposed to go? Does it even matter?

Well now that its all open I guess my warranty is invalid, unless I can put it back together properly.

I know someone on this forum has done this case change before so tell me before I get the other tiny tiny screw off, is there anything to be extra careful of when I take off the main circuit board?

(my backup plan- half put it back together, phone Orange Care and tell them I dropped it down some stairs) but then I'm back to blue case.......

Thanks for any help,

David

I'll just get mine apart....
The headphone socket is just clipped into the case, it doesnt sound broken.
You dont have to take off the two smaller screws, they just hold the metal shield onto the back of the board, screw them back in! The PCB and screen will pop out if you pull the side of the case away slightly.
There will be two orange cable, one for the jog dial and one connects the screen.
When removing the PCB, take the right side out first so as not to stress the screen cable.
The little internet button contacts should look kinda like a valley if you get what i mean.
the tools you need are a size 8 and a size 7 Torx bit, and a tiny flathead helps.
hope this helps!

Oh yeah, i havnt been able to remove the top front panel. it seems to be glued on. I dont want to break mine 😃

P.S Dont do what i just did, and forget to reconnect the jog dial! 😮ops:

Thanks a lot! Its all in bits again because it put it all back together and obviously didn't do it right as the cover wouldn't close, I will get to it in the morning.

A word of note to others doing this "mod", its by no means a Nokia Express-on Cover!

There are bits so fragile that if you breathe wrong you think you're gonna snap them (the LED assembly) and for me as a bit of an electronics novice, it all seems a bit scary. Having said that, the Mineral grey P800 does look super cool, although i'm starting to look back on the blue and think how funky it looked. Maybe I'll buy a new blue kit in another 6 months time.........

Disaster!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just got it all back together again, everything works fine, but now the microphone doesn't work AT ALL.

I'm so upset with myself, did I break something inside? I don't think i did, but then whats going on? did it need to be connected??

Basically I've now got a decision,

a) put the blue case back on, phone Orange, tell them I dropped, and get them to send out a replacement handset

b) if it is broken, then go and get it fixed by someone who knows whats going on inside my phone.

c) cut my losses, wait for P810/P900 😞

Where even is the microphone assembly on the PCB of the P800????
maybe some contacts needed to be lined up or something it plays sounds and MP3s perfectly through the speaker at the back, so thats connected.

I really really hope someone can help......

here is something I found on the web that may help

When taking the phone apart:
You will need a torx 8 screwdriver, a paperclip, tweezers, and a credit card.
1. Remove the stylus, battery cover, battery, and sim card.
2. using the corner of a credit card, pry open the back bezel from the top. There is a clip on both sides of the top at about 25% and 75%. The back bezel is the part that goes around the camera on the back of the phone. Once it has been pryed open, gently remove the bottom clips.
3. using the T8 screwdriver, remove all 4 screws gently. These screws are weak and may snap.
4. In the memory slot on both sides is a clip. use something like a straightened out paperclip to push both clips open. the case should pop open on the memory stick side. DO NOT TRY TO PULL THE FRAMES APART.
5. look inside the phone, and you will see an orange cable conneting both frames together, use the tweezers to pry it off the pcb. Do this gently, or you can damage the contacts.
6. once the jogdial cable has been disconnected from the pcb, you may pry apart the frame.
7. there is a ribbon on the left bottom side of the pcb. This is the LCD ribbon. use the tweezers to pull the ribbon straight off. pull on the memory stick side of the frame and remove the pcb and LCD.
8. Do not forget the speaker. it is in the front frame. there is a clip on each side of the speaker holder. Pull those clips straight outward to remove the speaker holder. remove the speaker holder and rubber gasket.
9. on the back frame, you will want to pry off the camera button holder. This is a white piece of plastic. Pry on the left side, then on the right. It should come off.

Putting the phone back together:
1. replace the camera button with the silver one. and put it back together. put it in the frame.
2. put the speaker gasket, speaker, and speaker holder in the new front frame. put the power button in the new front frame as well.
3. put the LCD in the new front frame and then the pcb. Attach the ribbon cable from the LCD to the pcb.
4. On the back frame, notice that there is a stub for the jog dial cable. Attach the jog dial to that stub. If done correctly, the jog dial will automatically plug into the pcb. Also make sure the camera gasket is connected to all 3 stubs. Many times this comes out and is attached to the camera on the pcb.
5. put the two frames together. once together, push on the frame over where the jogdial connector was to ensure a good connection.
6. Gently screw in all 4 screws. Be sure to include the battery support, or your battery will be loose.
7. attach the back bezel.
8. put in the sim, battery, battery back cover...
9. Turn on the phone. make sure that everything works. Test out the jog dial. Make a call...
