Is it possible to replace WWW with Opera?

15 replies · 3,885 views · Started 07 August 2002

First off, I finally figured out how to edit my Opera.sis(the only way I could figure out was to offload it to an MMC card and edit it with Notepad on my Windows machine). What sort of performance change will I see? Fewer crashes, I hope!

Here's the question: is it possible to uninstall the WWW app? It doesn't show up in the Intsall/Remove list. Or maybe it does, under another name?

Since the apps in the ROM are removable, wouldn't this end up having the same functionality as a 9290 with Opera from Nokia would have had?

As you said, WWW is in ROM, but it can't be deleted from there (so you cannot uninstall that browser). You can of course install Opera, but that just means that you will have 2 browsers on your 9290, but (again) your "Nokia browser" is still the default browser. I'm not sure if you can change that, most likely not.

I saw this question somewhere else the best solution that was come up with was to have itas the preferred app in Internet group (i.e. that way it loads when you press the internet group button twice). I suspect you could chnage it to the deafult opener of html files etc by using Open With (http://www.psiloc.com)...

That was the solution I was looking for. The trick with "Open with..." from Psiloc should work. I have to check this when I have time...

Rafe, btw did you see my suggestion for OPL lessons under the Vexed post in the 92x0 News section. Maybe I should make it an own post...

Tilman

Yes I did see your posts. Let just say there's something in the works (if you haven't spotted a certain someones hints already!).

It'd better be. If I can make a name of FreEPOC by giving away free software and have people begging for the enxt release (I kid you not) then Rafe better have something pretty bloody spectacular up his sleeve...

AndI don;t mean is "I Love Mum" tatoo on his arm.

:P

Sorry, that we continued within your post with some totally different topic. I was just checking from Rafe if there are plans to have some kind of OPL lessons on the site and then it got out of hands... 😃

No problem at all with the topic change . . . I just really wish I knew what you were talking about! IT sounds interesting!!!

Simirlarly off topic but kinda related to the current one..... Have Nokia gotten OPL working better on the 9210 in the last few months while I was absent as it was slow and buggy before.

Yes there is now a beta release avialble. Haven't got the link to hand, but you can find it easily enough.

To tgbrady:

We're talking about OPL - organiser programming language - something from the Psion days. Its a basic like programming language. You write it on the 9210 (or on your PC, using the SDK tools, or emulator to compile). It results in full programs - e.g. Vexed and Abp (see software directory) are both written in OPL. It was very popular in the Psion range.

People were asking for tutorials on how to do it, and I said effectively - be patient... Ewan (well I'm not going to attempt to explain that - he's Scottish you know - but it will become clearer soon).

Hope that's a bit clearer..

I guess these forums do get a bit confusing at times.

p.s. I dont have a tattoo.

Symbian develop OPL, not Nokia, and yes, it is a lot more stable since the latest release in late April2002. Anyone doing a bit of Maths will realise that it was at that point FreEPOC kicked into ER6 and started looking at the background stuff and so on - the results you are starting seeing just now. Speed is on a par with the 5mx in some respects, and faster (eg in graphics handling).

Yes, be patient. Something will happen, and I don;t like doingthings by half measures.

Oooooh goody, I didn't realise Symbian were continuing with OPL and were gonna let it fade into obscurity along with ER5. Hence I was under the impression Nokia hacked it about a bit for the 9210. I guess I'll start coding for it soon if I can get my head round OPL.
