Greetings all,
First, thanks for all the great postings. It's been critical as I navigate the waters of 9290 ownership. It's an unruly sea...
It seems to me that memory is the most critical issue to maintaining solid use of the Communicators. I've searched far and wide on Google, Google Groups, Yahoo Groups, My-Communicator, AllAboutER6 and dozens of small fry sites looking for an overview of memory consumption and tuning on the 92x0 series, but have had no luck. Small tips here and there, some that contradict each other. For example, numerous sites list switching the Opera cache from C: to D:, while a few interesting posts on opera.epoc suggest that the memory access is slow slow on the memory cards, it defeats the whole purpose.
Anyone have a pointer to some good reading for good memory tuning tips? If it doesn't exist, I'd be happy to collect all your suggestions and links and write up something that could be added to Rafe's user guide.
Thanks,
MB
I am about to return this thing if i dont get some answers and get a pocket pc phone!
I'm lost as to what your problems are? If it's website loading, putting the cache on the MMC will still be larger than the internal memory, and also a mile faster than downloading the site again. As for speeding it up, unless you enable HSCSD from your operator you are stuck at the lovely 9.6Kbps.
I have read for the 9210 you install opera onto the memory card and the cache is on the memory card. Is just that I would like to do the same or the 9210i
.
If so what to put i the .ini file so that the cache is saved on D: memory card.
Also what other files would need to moved or deleted ?
Thanks.
Here's a few tips (mostly obvious I'm afraid).
Don't use a background images (uses upto 150KB of memory)
Don't use a custom sidebar picture (uses 50KB memory)
Make sure your Calendar / Agenda file doesn't get too big. You can use on e of the entries in the Options menu to delet entries before a certain date.
Make sure you Contacts file is compressed. You can move it to D, but this is probably going to cause more hassle than its worth if you take your MMC card in or out with anr regularity.
If you use Mail a lot you can shift the D:\System\Mail folder. I think this is done via the e-mail applications. I dont have a 9210 to test this on.
You can move the help files from C:\System\Help to D:\System\Help or delet them entirely if you dont read them.
Switcher is probably the most efficient Task manager tpye program (http://www.ki-ag.de/html/tech/nokiaswitcher.html)
The Opera trick mentioned above (can't remeber hwo to do this off hand) is worth doing.
Dont keep any doucments on C unless you absolutely have to!
Always install to the memory card (for new programs) if you are gievn the option. You should also install All_nokia_xxxx_data.sis to D if you are starting from a complete hard reset.
However the thing to bare i mind with all of these is the memory is fairly low to start with.
What were the specific areas you were having trouble with in terms of low memory. Having more memory wont make programs run faster (they either have enough memory or they dont).
Great summary Rafe. Thanks.

Sorry, where is the explanation of this trick? I could't find it!! If it's worth it I'd like to do it.
