Faulty IMAP Software

There are a few other posts within this forum which refer to P800 owners attempts to log on to IMAP servers using the IMAP client provided within the Ericsson P800 phone. I have been undertaking some test with the software vendor of my e-mail system and we have determined, in addition to the lack of functionilty with respect to display of folders on the server, that the IMAP client is not able to display HTML formatted e-mails.

Should the Ericsson P800 try to download an HTML formatted e-mail then it will 'crash' or 'stall' the download. In some cases causing the battery to go flat within a short period of time.

My grievence here is that Sony-Ericsson made claims that the P800 clearly supported IMAP protocol. In reality their support is so far from the defined standards of IMAP4rev1 as to be somewhat of a joke and also in its implementation is faulty. I would argue that every Sony-Ericsson P800 user has a right under United Kingdom law (Fair Trade Act 1979 revised), or other national applicable law, to a product which works as stated in the description of the product - i.e. a full implementation of the IMAP4rev1 protocol as laid out in the relevant international specifications, anything less than this is pure mis-representation.

Unfortuantely, I did not purchase my handset within the UK and cannot, therefore, pursue Sony-Ericsson through the UK trading standards offices. However, I would be most grateful if some worthy individual out there with a similar desire to see Sony-Ericsson fulfil their obligations to their users would contact the UK Trading Standards office to complain that the P800 does not do what Sony-Ericsson claim it will do, and that we are, therefore, at Sony-Ericsson's cost, entitled to get them to put it right (i.e. implement IMAP properly).

However good the product may be in general, there is no reason that P800 users should be short changed in Sony-Ericssons inability to implement features to recognised international specifications.

Please feel free to berate Sony-Ericsson as much as possible, it is only by putting them under pressure that we can get a proper IMAP implementation implemented, and any bugs that may exist fixed.

Thanks

Sorry, but I really don't agree with you there - I think the IMAP client on the P800 is actually one of the more capable IMAP clients I've used - particularly for a mobile phone. I find it straightforward and reliable.

OK, so there are some limitations, such as only handling the Inbox, but if you can find any documentation where SonyEricsson claims it supports that then go ahead. I can understand that you might be annoyed (though I can't really can't see why you would be), but I believe you're very mistaken if you think you have any kind of case to take to the Trading Standards Office.

And for what it's worth, I have no problem whatsoever with reading HTML mails from my IMAP mail, and I get them regularly. But perhaps there's something much more specific in the HTML mails you're receiving that's causing a problem?
