Hey all, I'm having trouble connecting my a920 (which, frankly, is the dogs b*llucks) to my pc, you see the software supplied allows IR and com port connections, yet they were kind enough to give me a usb cable... any one with any ideas around this, software (i cant see any on motorolas site) or tricks of the trade, id love to hear from you.

40 + people haev seen this post, am i the only person the have been given a usb cable?! just even if anyone could say how they connect, it would bw helpful 😞
Worked fine for me....
As soon as I plugged the cable in, it detected the device. I then installed the software, and rebooted. I think then that the USB cable was an option in the mrouter properties (mrouter is the communications app shown by an icon in the system tray).
I will check when I get home this evening and let you know. I have to reinstall the software due to a pc rebuild.
If you right-click on the mrouter icon and choose properties, select all the com ports, then plug in the phone it should detect it. Have a look at the properties again and it'll tell you which one it's using (don't be on the internet when doing this BTW). Then you can deselect all the com ports it isn't using. It'll probably use com4 but this is the easiest way to find out.
Make sure you do deselect the ones it doesn't use. One of them will be your modem so you'll loose Internet access if you leave it assigned to the mrouter (believe me. Took me fecking hours to figure out why I suddenly lost my Internet connection!)
cheers, nah you see i did all that already but usb isnt an option in the mrouter software, only the com ports and infra red... cheers though, appreciate the you taking the time

I have a couple of known bugs on the issue tho ... when I put the phone on the cradle, maybe 1 in 10 times it'll just reboot. Nice! Quite often I need to restart PC / phone / both 😛 just to get it to connect tho!
Am running 11.06 atm, tho 3 are sorting me out with a brand spanking 11.20 which has a few dropout bugs less then 11.11.

I have the same problem. First time I installed the Desktop suite it worked. Then I could choose usb connection in the router. The desktop suite found my A920 but the explorer didn�t. So I could�nt install anything to it.
But now the mrouter dosen�t have the usb connection as a option anymore. The only device that is listed is com1, com2 and ir... Where is the usb? How can I get it back as a connection in the router?
Go to safe mode, Remove the Desktop suite. Make sure you have installed the latest USB driver for your motherboard.
Then try again by installing the SW BEFORE you attach the phone to the USB cable.
That should work.
Are you using XP or ???
I have tryed all that. I uninstalled the suite and reinstalled it, before I plugged the usb-cable in (and I had my antivirus software disabled).
But still the same problem, I can't choose USB as a connection. And yes, i have xp...
Any more suggestions?

Did you check that you have the newest USB driver?
What is your motherboard?
You could take the phone + driverCD + USB cable down to the shop and let them try, it can be the USB cable or the phone.
