Can I install AllNokiaApps.SIS to D instead of C?

16 replies · 3,734 views · Started 12 August 2002

Is there any way to install the apps(all the RAM apps that come with the 92xx) to the MMC card rather than the RAM?

The 9210 is NOT like the Psion style EPOC devices, insofar as the C: drive on the 9210 is not used as RAM, the 9210 uses the same type of RAM that a conventional PC uses (which speeds up access time etc). The only thing that space is needed for on the C: drive is installing apps (for some odd reason it decompresses .sis files to the C: drive first then moves the files to destination). In conclusion, you can install those files to the MMC, by simply selecting D: as the drive to install to and they will work. But there's not a huge amount of point.

*Looks at TANKERx* The first person to ask how to get a 72pin SIMM or or 168pin DIMM into a 9210 gets a trout slapping or ther posts on cross-dressing ressurrected. (I can see these jokes coming a mile off).

It's a point for history, but on the 5mx if you had the correct RAM chip (ie recovered from another board) you could solder another 16mb on top of th eexisting 16mb chip to get 32mb memory. Admittedly it's unstable (so you burn some links to take it back to 28mb) but it works beautifully.

And no, I'm not giving out the tech details...

Okay, when I installed the AllCommunicatorBlahBlah.SIS file - whatever it's called - I was not given the option to install to D. Do I have to install them on e at a time to get that option? Can I move them instead?

So, wait a minute. The "C" drive is just storage space on the 9290? It doesn't use empty space on C as Virtual RAM? Why the hell not? Even Pocket PCs do that!

So you're telling me that if I had next to nothing installed on C it wouldn't help[ performance at all?

ARG!!!

WHOA!

It kept telling me it had "Problem sending email," so I thought it wasn't posting. Apparently it was!

Nope no performance increase whatsoever, but one thing to remember is that for the OS to deal with virtual memory is painfully annoying and slow add to that that the storage medium is also slower than RAM (it may be solid state but still slow), for the percieved benefit of more space the 9210 still has better ideas hence doesn't need a 200MHz cpu to run at a moderate speed.

Oh and if you click edit there's an option for you to delete a post instead of edit it, I've already deleted the dupilcate posts though.

Yeah I got this error too I;m not sure why...

Will look into it.

Since most of the apps you installed are available as individual .sis files anyway, why not just uninstall these ones and then reinstall. This time, you will have the option of installing to the d drive.

Note there are a few apps that arn't available individually, like profiles so make sure you don't uninstall these. Also, personally, I just feel more comfirtable leaving basic apps like clock and file manager on the c drive.

Well, I have a 128 Mb MMC card. Is there ANY benefit of reinstalling all the apps to that card rather than the "C drive"?

I fixed the problem. Somone had E-mail address set as their e-mail address and it was upsetting the server.

Depends on how much space you have left on the C drive. One of the problems refered to earlier, is that when you install an sis file, even to d drive it is first placed on the c drive temporarily. So if it is a big sis, and your c drive does not have enough space, life gets complicated.

Not sure if this is still true if you copy the sis to d and run it on the nokia.

Probably not worth the effort if you have a 9210i, more useful on 9210 (less mem. on c drive).

So there's no way to stop Opera from telling me, "Not enough memory" when I got to any relatively complex web site?

Reboot the device (ie flip the battery out an din again) before you connect to teh net for an Opera Session...

The thing I noticed when I had the 9210 is that the amount of free executable memory decreased when some apps were installed even though you were not running them. They seamed to have some memory resident component.

Never looked into it in any great detail, but I found that after full format and minimum software + Opera installed I had alot more memory free, hence I was able to view more complex sites. As I installed more software, the amount of memory still free dropped significantly.

The only way around it I could think of (not tried it), would be to install almost everything to the memory card, install Opera on the main memory and then remove the memory card when you wanted to run Opera. That way, memory hogging apps would in effect be disabled due to the memory card being disabled.

Actually, a slightly better alternative, would be to do essentially the same as above, but have 2 alternate system directories on the MMC card. That is, something like this.

Start with a virtually clean system directory (on D) giving max. free executable memory. Copy it to some dir, like Normal_System.
Install Opera on D.
Now copy System to Opera_System, and then restore the normal_System to system directory.
Get rid of normal_System dir.

Install all apps on D:

When you want to run Opera, rename system to normal_system, and rename Opera_System to System.

To change back do the reverse.

It sound a lot like hard work, but if could be scripted or something it would be simpler once set up. I think I got around 800k more free executable memory on a clean system which make a huge difference when you look at what is actually free after loading Opera with a web page.

If the last bits could be scripted, I reckon it could work well.

EWAN, I reckon you should be able to shed a little light on this free memory business. I'd have a real good play and do it all myself, but I havn't actually got a Nokia right now.

I'm telling you straight, if the P800 has any of these memory problem things, I'm throwing in the towel and going back over to the dark side (A pocket PC phone addition). At least until the Hilden comes out, and if they still haven't got over this memory miser thing by then I reckon everyone will be doing the same (If not earlier).

Surely following your plan it would be easier to use the 16mb MMC that came with the 9210 as the Opera system and use your normal 68MB or 128MB MMC as the normal system install. That way to view complex pages you just reboot with the 16MB MMC in the slot.

Assuming you have 2 MMB cards, that would basicly do the same thing.

My only problem is I don't like the wear and tear of repeatedly opening the flap and removing the card. Probably just me, but I don't like having to do it. It drove me nuts having to swaps sim cards as well.

Hence my second suggestion about renaming etc. If it could be "scripted" or something, then I think it would work very well.

Otherwise, you just use file manager to stick a letter at the end of one folder and remove a letter from the end of the other.

It still bugs me that programs that arn't running should take up memory. Just because windows does it, doesn't mean its ok.

Strange, I posted a reply,

and it shows when I search my posts, but not on this page.
