Importing contacts from 9000

10 replies · 3,738 views · Started 03 October 2003

Hi guys. I'm new here, after making the leap from a 9000 to a 9210i. I've been through the manual, and looked at the first 50 pages of this forum (did Jimbo ever get his contacts imported from <his> 9000?), but I still can't find, or figure, out how to import the contacts

I previously used NServer, which backed up all my contacts from the 9000 to my XP PC, but the new PC Suite tells me is that it can only import from a 9110

I would really appreciate help here, as without my hundreds of business contacts, the new phone is useless to me

Thanks

Hi there, I recently did the samme upgrade as you. What I did was install MS Outlook on my PC, then synchronise Outlook with my 9000 - contacts. Be careful of your field mapping - do you have intellisync? If not, I can direct you to a site that has it. After you are happy with your contacts in Outlook, load PC Suite for the 9210 and syncronise the 9210 with Outlook. You may need to this a few times with different field mappings until you are satisfied that your data is exact.

Regards, Ian

Wow, that was fast!

Thanks Ian, I'll try that. I've been meaning to get all my email addresses in Outlook Express copied to my contacts database, so maybe I can do it while I'm experimenting

Thanks again, but strange that Nokia don't support the import as normal...

Mike

With N9000, you cannot use N9210 Data Mover.

But you can use PC Suite (first you have to install Upgrade Software plug-in to PC Suite - you can find it on your CD or on Nokia web) - use "Import from N9110" option. This module uses the same mapping as PC Sync module and therefore it is little bit lossy.

And - of course, you can use PIM synchronization - but it lossy, too.

Thanks, Petr, but it got as far as finding the Contacts.txt file in Nserver, identified 782 contacts, and then greyed out the Next button, so I couldn't complete the process 😞

I'm going to try Ian's method again, having downloaded a trial version of Intellisync. I only need to do this once...

Woopee, Petr's method worked, after a lot of faffing around with Com ports. Lots of data lost, but what the heck - it works...

Now why couldn't the manual have said that it could import from the 9000, as well as the 9110?

I wasn't able to export the newly aquired contacts to Outlook, but that probably needs more messing about with Intellisync, ActiveSync and Outlook; all of which I'm very unfamiliar

Whenever that alternative 9210 manual comes out, please put me down for one 😊

Thanks guys. I'll probably have lots more questions in the future ...

I would appreciate very much to know where Intellisync for 9000 is available: can you help me?

It's because of some versions of PC Suite on some versions of OS don't feel like continuing in this step until the "Calendar import" checkbox is checked, too, together with the "Contacts import" checkbox.
This must be Calendar export file from N9110, not from N9000. But you can use any or empty export file from N9000, just edit it and change the protocol version to:
[FILE-PROTOCOL]
4.0

Rowing, send me an email at [email protected] for a link to Intellisync. It is the original freeware version that has long since been discontinued, but I kept record of a specific location.

Hopefully somebody else will find this useful; I made some notes at the time detailing how I transferred my data across.

I'll try and keep this page updated wih info:
http://users.ninja.org.uk/~jonathan/9000i_to_9210.html

Briefly, the summary of 2 weeks of conversation with Nokia UK
technical support (me telling them things to try!) came up with the
following:

To import using the PC software:

- You can only import both CONTACTS.TXT and CALENDAR.TXT at
the same time. If you only try CONTACTS.TXT, it does not work. (I
did not try only CALENDAR.TXT)

- You *must* have at least one To-Do list entry in your
CALENDAR.TXT, otherwise the software won't work. (You can elect
not to import any To-Do list items, however they must be there)

- Be warned that the PC software *loses information*. For example, if you
have a contact with eight telephone numbers, e.g. "1", "2", ... to "8",
and import this contact, you will be left with only four numbers for this
person. In my case these seemed to be "1", "2", "5" and "6". Nokia UK
seemed to think that Nokia Finland weren't going to worry about this, and
probably wouldn't fix it.

The only other way of transferring information is to use a 9110 phone. I
managed to track one down, and did the following:

- Back up old contacts from 9110 (you don't want to upset your friend who
lent you the phone!)

- Delete all 9110 contacts, then use 9110 PC Suite to import your
CONTACTS.TXT from your 9000i. (this works perfectly)

- Use PC Suite to import these contacts to the 9110

- Place the 9110 and 9210 within IR sight of each other, and use Data
Mover on the 9210 to transfer your contacts

- Restore the 9110 to its previous state

- Go through each and every contact entry on your 9210, converting
"Tel (PCN)" to "Tel GSM ()". Yes, this is tedious!

- Go through each and every contact, changing Tel (Private) to Tel
(Phone) where necessary. No, there is no way of automatically
telling when it is necessary.

Nokia also recommended using Pumatech's Outlook synchronisation
software, but I could not get it to work:

- It is designed for Outlook 97, not 2000 and certainly not XP.

- It crashed with an "unknown error" when I tried to import anything into
Outlook

- Outlook has no support for more than about 3 telephone numbers
per person, and certainly has no support for named telephone
numbers e.g. "Tel (Business)" or "Tel (Billing)" etc. I was less than
confident that the Pumatech Intellisync software would have solved this.

HTH!

I think I'm going to put the above information on a web page
somewhere, actually. There must be plenty of other people with
similar troubles...

I'll let you know when I get it online.

Have a good 2002!

Jonathan
