This has happened three times to a friend of mine with a P800. The error message says that it needs formatting and there is no way out when the phone restarts everything is gone. apart from obviously backing up are there any other reasons why this happens?

Your internal memory was full, wasn't it ?
Try always to have 3MB+ free there, and I'm sure it won't be formatted anymore. At least with me 😉
Internal memory being full will cause it to crash, corrupt files can be caused by a crash, taking the battery out or ad damaged program. The backup software will restore everything for you, i do mine weekly. Also the newer firmware is a lot more stable. 😊

NEVER get your internal memory to a critical stage, I suggest after restoring your data, try unisntalling all softwares from the Internal Memory and reinstall them on the External. and try flushing all unneeded sms, mms, emailsm even pics that u don't need, cuz they all are saved on the internal
