DIY phone updates?

From the SE P900 Press Release on 20 October:

"Starting today, there are also on-line phone update services available from sonyericsson.com. They allow consumers to download the latest version of the phone software directly to the phone without having to visit a service centre"

Does anyone know whether this applies to updates for P800 and all the other SE phones? More to the point, can anyone actually find this on the SE site?

I've had a quick search but can't see anything about it.

Julie

Yeah, I had a good look around the support area and couldn't find any reference to it. Indeed, as the P900 hasn't actually been released yet, it doesn't even have an area within "Global Support".

I remember a while ago hearing (I believe from Expansys Tech Support) that DIY P800 updates would be available before year end. Now I'm wondering whether SE have decided to scrap that idea on the P800 and offer it from the P900 onwards.

We shall see.

The service hasn't started yet and whether or not it will be made availble to the p800 i don't know but i do know that p900's that are floating arround(given to people under NDA) with its current firmware version don't support the feature. The first commercial version will. Its probably just a firmware update.

So you may have to update your firmware before you can use the firmware update feature 😉

Actually, that would be useful (IF it was on the P800). My problem is that I'm an expensive flight or long boat trip away from the nearest service center. If I could just do that the once and then be able to download any others it would be fantastic.

Well,that's the idea 😉

Yes, I hadn't missed the irony of that! 😃

Currently trying to figure out where I can get mine done - only just got it, but I know it's a couple of revisions out of date.

How can you tell which version of firmware your phone has?

And is there a list somewhere which tells you what you're missing from later versions?

Cheers

netbookbabe, where abouts in West Yorkshire are you? The CPW on Briggate in Leeds wil do it, as will the Link in keighly. Think there are a few around now that can do it. 😊
