If you want UIQ 2.1 on your P800 - Try this!
I think it's a good way.. hopefully they will aware how much love you have in our P800!!!!
i really don't think that this petition online thing will work, the developers won't really go out of there way when the newer sony p900 handset is expected for launch next month, they'll most probably neglect all us beloved p800 users,
(oh yeah, a petition like this was also started for like keeping the msn chat rooms open and it didn't really work)

what? Developers would love this to happened. Currently if they write any apps for the new P900 using the MIDP 2.0 API or any new UIQ 2.1 stuff it will on run on the P900, which is going to be a very small market. If the P800 was upgraded, it would make the market for writing full featured P900 application massive.
I wouldn't hold my breath hoping for the P900 software to be migrated back to the P800 if this quote from the my-symbian review is accurate:
'ROM memory has been expanded from 16 MB to 32 MB (about 25 MB of it is used by the current firmware).'
Its going to be a bit tricky to fit 25Mb of firmware into a device that only has 16Mb 😞
cheers

Keep in mind that this petition is solely about upgrading the current UIQ version (2.0) in the P800 to the next version of UIQ (2.1). Which should very much be possible for SE to fit in the P800 ROM chip. UIQ is also designed in a way that makes each version easily upgradable to the next. You can read more about UIQ on www.uiq.com .
The reason for the P900 ROM being that much bigger is mostly due to it being occupied by stuff like T9 dictionaries for 19 different languages, UI images being 65k vs. 4k in the P800 and more P900 spesific features that have NOTHING to do with UIQ 2.1.

But even if the P800 was upgraded, writing for the P800 would still be different as the P800 would still use a 12bit Colour pallet rather than the P900's 16bit.
So you would still have P800 and P900 specific applications after the upgrade.

Not necessarily. Just larger install files (installer figures out which device it's installing on and uses different graphics for each).
Besides, only really games and graphics packages tend to take advantage of more colours. Your average office app doesn't really need 65,000+ colours!
When writing Windows apps in "The good old days" you would always stick to the basic pallete to ensure the colours you used were available and would be displayed correctly on as many PC's as possible. No point writing yourself out of the very large legacy market just so you can use "Mid-morning-apple-blossom-as-seen-in-a-thunder-storm-in-surrey" green for the title bar!

This is not the case. The screen size is the same, so the code for each application would be the same. The only different would be the graphics files, and that is not hard at all.
But there is still a difference, I'd like to be wrong, but I think the chances of SE upgrading P800's to UIQ 2.1 is slim to none.
The main selling point of the P900 to current P800 owners is the fact that it has been upgraded to UIQ 2.1 amoungst other small improvments, let's face it...why would they go to the expense of upgrading the P800 when it will only take away some (Granted only a small handful) customers from the P900.
I love this to happen, but i'm not holding my breath!
My guess is that it will happen, but that you're gonna have to wait for it (probably one or two months after the P900 is released). That way, most potential P900 buyers will have bought the P900 allready, and those who decided to stick with the P800, get satisfied as well. At least, that's my guess (or that is how I would have done it, if I was SE😊 )

don't think so ... it's still a matter of marketing and ond other selling puposes.
our P800 will remain the same, and even don't think that SE will upgrade it's firmware again, as I recall for my old T86i (I got it the day it launched) and I only got 1 single upgrade, and for the last one and half years they haven't made any firmware update, cuz (as I believe) they've launched better phones that need suuport instead.

Future roadmap
Since the P800 is an open environment, new solutions
will continually be developed by both Sony
Ericsson and third parties. In most cases, such new
solutions will work on the existing product range,
even when successors to the P800 have been
shipped.
Our internal roadmap is not presented publicly. As
a general direction, further solutions can be
expected in these areas:
 Corporate messaging and groupware access
 Security
 Java
 Device management and user provisioning
 Developer tools
This clearly says that you can expect upgrades in many keys areas, and that most of these will be available even after the P800 has been superceed.
Now, I think SE are about to do a big U turn here, but if they do then then they cheated anyone who took them on there word after reading this document.
Well?
The petition gets a mention on the Infosync news site. The number of people who have signed it is now nearing 3,000 people.
Well I certainly hope they do provide the upgrade for P800 users, and have signed the petition with all fingers and toes crossed. But I'm really surprised at Sony Ericsson. They've generally been high-handed w.r.t. their (non-existent) customer support/relationhip management. Right from keeping the enthusiasm fuelled through timely information, to providing meaningful upgrades and features, they're far from what one expects from Sony.
Lets hope things change!!
I've signed it already, i just don't want my P800 doing the 10 second kill me thingy on me all the time :$
