Network Compatibility and Settings

Since I'm apparently not the only one having GPRS problems with their 6600, I thought I'd start this thread for people trying to get their phones configured.

If you have gotten GPRS to work completely, post and let us know who your provider is. If you haven't, let us know that too.

If people contribute to this list, those of us on incompatible networks can find out who to switch to. I'll keep editing this message so there's a unified list.

So, to start it off:
United States
Tmobile - Not compatible

United Kingdom
Orange - GOOD - Set APN to "orangeinternet", leave everything else blank or automatic.
Vodafone - Compatible - set APN to "Internet", username to "web" and home page to "live.vodafone.com" - leave everything else default.

Finland
Sonera - GOOD - Set APN to "internet", leave everything else blank or automatic.

Phillipines
Globe - Expected in December
Smart - Expected in December

well.... here in the philippines: both globe and smart admitted ly told me that as of this moment, they still don't support the 6600's GPRS capabilities. it will take some times, as per their technical.... maybe by december, fully supported already....

as of this moment, i can only browse 2 sites. yahoo & my network's .asp page

Hi,

Sonera, Finland working fine

AP name=internet
Phones Ip address=automatic
DNS=nothing
Proxy=nothing

No account name and pasword

Works fine on Orange UK

Accesspoint: orangeinternet
Leave everything else blank: Username, password etc
DNS: 0.0.0.0
IP:Blank

I can confirm that these settings work for Orange.

😊

Thanks very much!

Are your MMS settings working?

I wouldn't say T-Mobile is incompatible. GPRS works for TCP/IP connections, you can browse any web site using either the built-in XHTML browser or Opera. WAP access and MMS do not work, meaning you can't use T-Mobile's own t-zones WAP service and send/receive multimedia messages.

My access point settings:

Data bearer: GPRS
Access point name: wap.voicestream.com
Username: None
Prompt password: No
Password: <empty>
Authentication: Normal
Homepage: wap.myvoicestream.com (this doesn't work)

I think tmobile is a little less compatible than that. For one thing, you can't get to hotmail. This is because you can't use the tzones hotmail access, and both the built in browser and Opera get script errors if you try to log in through mobile.msn.com/pocketpc.

Also, the built in IMAP client doesn't seem to work, WAP downloads have lots of problems (try downloading the free theme from nokia's site!), and everything is unbelievably slow.

Haven't tried hotmail, but t-mobile has a pop email proxy service, maybe that can help.

I have no problems with downloads or connection speed. I just downloaded the Climber theme from Nokia's site and installed without any problems. Speed is, frankly speaking, more than I expected. It's definitely close to a 56K modem. I've even browsed through Slashdot discussions, though the browser takes its time to handle the nested tables in that case...

In fact, I upgraded my data service for unlimited MB's for 9.99$ a month since I ended up using half a meg just going through BBC News in one day.

No variant on wap.myvoicestream.com is going to work, because tmobile so far only supports wap 1.1, not 2.0. There's a whole thread about this on howardforums.com.

The Tmobile e-mail thing only works with pop servers - its useless if you already have an e-mail client on your phone.

And I still can't get climber to download and install. I always get a "services unable to perform operation" error. You got it to install properly connecting through tmobile? How odd...

Here's a reply from a Nokia person to this issue:

Yse, only MMS over HTTP is supported. You should go for operator and ask if they have upgraded their previous WAP gateway to HTTP proxy.

In case they don't have a HTTP proxy available you are not able to send MMS messages or browse WML/XHTML pages.

You could try to use the WAP gateway IP as a proxy IP to see if it works.

I am using vodafone LIVE on nokia 6600 and whenever i try to access the web i get an error "services:unable to perform operation".......

Is there any particular reason for this??

Hi BS0409.

Sorry to hear about your problems connecting to Vodafone L!ve.
There are a few reasons that come to mind with errors like this, the first one being a fault with the software on the handset.

The best way to prove a possible fault is to try your sim card in another Vodafone configured handset. If this gives the same error message then we are looking at a potential sim card or network fault. If in fact it works, you have proved the issue is purely contained to your handset.

If you have proved from the above instructions this is a handset issue then it would be a good idea to check your phone settings. I have listed them for you below. Simply follow this guide to make sure your handset has all the correct settings.
