P900 or N6600?

Guys

Help me out. I wasn't sure which forum to post on, as I guess there'll be a bias towards S/E or Nokia depending where I post, but I trust you to give your hoest opinions! (and I'll post this on the 6600 forum too 😉)

I've had a N6600 for a few days now, and I'm not getting along too well with it. I've had Nokia's for the past 12 years, but this is the first Symbian phone I've had, so I'm not sure whether it's just a case of getting used to it, or if I'll never like it. First opinions:

* The data suite is useless, much worse than previous phones
* Batt life isn't good, maybe 2 days with a couple of hours of calls
* The navigation is very difficult. I suspect this is just a case of me getting used to it, but these days I expect something to be intuative enough for me to pick it up and start working with it.

Here's what I want from a phone:

  • Solid build quality (the 6600 is OK in this respect)
  • Decent handsfree phone (6600 not so good)
  • Good sync'ing with Outlook
  • Good UI, intuative, fast
  • poly/mp3 ringtones
  • decent camera
  • bluetooth (for a car kit)

At the moment I carry a PDA and a phone. I only use the PDA for contacts and diary, so I expect the phone to be able to replace these functions easy enough. The 6600 doesn't make a bad job of it once the suite is set up, but it's not awe inspiring.

So what do you think? I've had Nokia all my mobile life, and really do not want to change, BUT, if the P900 is the answer, then I will. I know many people that have had/got the T68i and T610 and whlst it's OK, it's no better, in truth, than the competing phone from Nokia, apart from maybe in build quality.

I'd love to hear your opinions, I can still return the 6600 and get the P900 for about 100 more.

The P900 is the right one for you if you want a PDA replacement. The 6600 is a cute Symbian phone, but the lack of a decent sized touch screen and stereo sound output, makes it less attractive as a PDA replacement, IMO anyway.

I don't really need a PDA replacement, but the problem is I'm crap at carrying my PDA all the time, so if I can get a phone that does the PDA basics well, then that's a bonus and one less peice of tech that I need to carry around.

I hadn't even considered the stereo sound, but I have another peice of kit - iPOD - that I lug around for that, so it's not a big priority for me.

Ok, well as far as I can tell the only major differences between the 6600 and the P900 is that the P900 has more available user memory and RAM, bigger touch sensitive screen with a more "PDA like" interface and stereo sound output. The 6600 is however somewhat smaller in size and cheaper in price, so I suppose if you don't need the advantages you get from a P900 when it comes to serious (geeky) PDA usage, a 6600 might just be the right choice for you.

Thanks. THe touchscreen is a good thing, and obviously lacking in the 6600, but I guess that makes the phone slightly less resilient if it's being thrown around (which I don't, but it's used for business/travel, so it needs to be resonable robust, unlike the 7250 which I owned for about a week).

I've been doing some SMS testing tonight for a system at work, so I'm getting used to the 6600, but it just seems that what I could do in 3 keystrokes on my trusty 6310i now takes a lot more. Maybe that's the price of change/choice, or maybe I'm just getting old! e.g. I've still not worked out how to forward a message with the existing text - v annoying.

Both can act as PDA replacements actually, depending on your PDA needs, but when it comes to text input, handwriting recognition (P900=Jot) or the on screen QWERTY keyboard is much faster than T9 from my experience.

With a 128MB Memory Stick DUO you can also fit a few albums on there and leave your IPOD at home. Most people buying a P800/P900 do it just because they want that "all-in-one" device.

My advice would be to just try out the P900 in a shop (when/where available) for a test-drive. I haven't gotten mine yet (maybe tomorrow? 😕 ), but I know it's the right choice for me because I've been using a P800 for close to a year now, and it's served me very well. Besides getting a slightly improved software and screen with the P900, the casing of the P800 never felt right to me, whereas the P900 should have a more robust and definitely more classy looking case.

I used to carry an Ipaq and a cellphone before I bought my P800. Since then the Ipaq has collected dust in a drawer...

The P900 is a good phone wich is great as both a PDA replacement and as a handset. A major upgrade from the P800 is that it now supports T9 input for SMS when the flip is closed. So either with the pen or with the keyboard you can type big E-mails/SMS quickly.

If I where you I would return the 6600 as you have that possibility and pick up the P900. Test it and make your own oppinion. If you don't like it return it and switch back to the Nokia...

I'm still thinking weather I get it or not! it's a matter of "do the upgrade worth the cost?"😕
