Memory problems

30 replies · 6,720 views · Started 06 November 2001

I've got a 64k card which is fine, but i need to free some comm. memory. I've tried moving all but the ini. files to mmc but the apps don't work. I'm a carpenter, i work with wood, this is freaking me out 'cos i can't run certain progs without a reboot.I've tried taskman(rmr?) but i can't clean the memory, possibly down to a bug. Help somebody..I'm sure this is a problem that a kid can solve without thinking, but i can hand cut dovetail joints so there!! Seriously, what can i move from c to User posted image without hitting a file not found scenario?
Please and thanks
Mark.

It's good that there is lot of free memory in c (about 3.5MB of 4MBtot) but there is also 8Mb memory for programms as working memory what you can free up only killing tasks.

First, you have to install everything to d, and if you want, you can install also programms that are normally in c, to d(all_nokia_9210_data.sis to MMC), but you must format your device before that..

As JeP says all-nokia-data.sis is your file. Depedning on your firmware you might want to consider downloaded the updated version from the Nokia support site.

My recommednation would be to start everything again (do a complete reinstall). Obviously it would a good plan to move the Contacts and E-mail Store to the MMC as well.

When you install apps the sis file stays on the C drive (even if you install to D). There are 2 ways to tackle this, either set your 9210 NOT to save the SIS file [1] (which I do) or move the SIS files from C to D (which I also do).

The SIS files on the C drive can be found at C\System\Install. Move everything from here to D\System\Install except the LOG file - this must remain on C.

[1] Even if you choose to NOT keep the SIS files small SIS files are still stored - these are basically uninstall SIS files and are needed if you want to uninstall something. - These can still be moved to the D drive as mentioned above.

Btw,
There seems to be bug at moving contacts to the MMC as Manowar post earlier..

But message store seems to work fine when you move it to the MMC.

if i move all the sis files from C to D, would i still be able to remove/uninstall these applications?

Yes. But don't move the log file that's in the System\Install directory. leave that where it is.

What is the minimum i can leave on c and still function? Can i run the commu. from d drive? In lamens terms (if it's possible) what are the control and data files for? can they be on c? Is there a way to back up c drive to mmc and then format c? All these questions and more in tonights' ER.........................6! The only problems i ever had with my zx81 were ram pak wobble! And static.[ This Message was edited by hazy1uk on 2001-11-13 1939 ]

And heat - you could fry an egg on the ZX81!!!

My current setup is all messages & calander are on MMC, all SIS files are on MMC, everything else stays there. Moving contacts to MMC can cause problems (well - annoyance rather than problems).

At my next install I'm going to have a play about and install File Manager to C and try install ALL other apps (including the ones that nokia suggest go on C Drive) on to the MMC and see what happens.

And yes, you can backup your C to the MMC. And then format the C drive, but any apps you have installed on the MMC may not work properly until you restore from MMC as the INI files are usually put on the C drive.

I have "all_nokia......sis" and "all_memory....sis" on MMC. Yes, everything that could possibly be..

I format my commi and installed allnokia9210data to d drive...
...exept file manager > because when i take my mmc of and try to (example) get some pictures or wav or something from another mmc, that file manager in c is pretty usefull.. because if i take my mmc of, then there is nothing in my commi.

Have to say that works fine even everything is on d

Regards

I have now 3229kb for free.. it's been something about 3400 but some progs just dont go to d drive (i mean progs like mobile tuppi) Somebody have told that when you upgrade .62, you get 700kb more space on c drive (smaller rom image?), but i cannot confirm that..

What about exterminating the Help files located in the C\System\help ??? Can I delete them ???

I currently still have the following files...

- Card Deck. hlp
- rtp_hlp.hlp
- Clk.hlp
- Fileman.hlp
- ima_hlp.hlp
- img_hlp.hlp

I know that those above files do not take mucho space but any single KB taken off might help in memory problems.

Can someone advise if I can delete the above mentioned files?

Thanks!!!

Filakia

AFAIK you can get rid of help files. It might upset the device if it goes looking for them (e.g. if you tried to load help), but the Symbian OS is very good about this sort of thing and will probably just say. Oi You - No help Files! Sorry Can't Lod 'em!

You havent remove help yet? you can do it from add/remove..

And yes, like Rafe says... it says "file is missing" that's all..
[ This Message was edited by JeP on 2001-11-14 1233 ]

HEY !!! Of course I had exterminated the Help tool since a very long time.

But, after that, each time I add a new app, it automaticaly adds a kind of help file in the C or D drive...

I still had some files stucked there... So I was just wondering if I could DEL them too...

(by the way, I miss a direct DEL button on the keyboard, like in a PC)

Anyway, you know that here in Greece, with all the sun & the beautiful girls..., we are kind of lazy time to time...

Will go and DEL them straight away.

Tnaks & Filakia

so np deleting those files...

hmm, direct DEL button.. i use backspace everywhere..

Hi Patrick,

How have you managed to get your calendar on the MMC? I believe that the default calendar is always opened on the C drive.....

Um, yes - but the 9210 still opens a default calendar in C\System\Data - which is also the calendar opened whenever the calendar key is pressed.

Yes, but all the calander "data" can be stored on the MMC, if you use it a lot then it saves space on the C drive.
