can you install ANY UIQ software on the P800 would any incompatability cause any phone problems
UIQ and the p800
isn't uiq a general name for symbian 7? if you install 7.1 apps onto it, it won't work, but 7.0 ones will. phones with 7.1 like the p900 supports back compatibility.
(i think that info is correct)

Sorry nk8, but your info is not correct. The P800 and P900 uses the exact same OS; Symbian OS v.7.0. UIQ is the interface that runs on top of the core OS (Symbian). And this is where the P800 and P900 is different. The P800 uses UIQ 2.0, whereas the P900 uses the updated UIQ version; 2.1.
Now, UIQ 2.1 is fully backwards compatible with UIQ 2.0. Meaning that all the software written for the P800 should work on the P900. Software written for UIQ 2.1 (P900) should also be compatible with UIQ 2.0 (P800), except for those that are written with spesific hardware (like the difference in screen colours), spesific UIQ 2.1 updated features (like Java MIDP 2.0) and spesific P900 features implemented by SE (like the Communicorder) in mind.
being a newbie I thought as UIQ and P800 seemed to be always posted together they were mutually compliant , it gets really confusing when operating systems are given several names. I was also told by SE customer services that the P800 should reinstall main phonefunction software if there were any installation application problems ,MY p800 didn,t.
I have had to get it fixed at the shop- should that be covered by the warranty or will they charge it on the insurance excess.
Thanks Raven I have just seen your update . If you did try to install hardware specific software on the P800 which it doesnt support ,like as you suggested colour screenchange app for example ,although it would not work would it cause any other problems?

It really shouldn't cause any problems, no. 😊
An example of this is that if you install the VRally game for the P900 (it uses a 16 bit colour palette) on the P800 (which only supports 12 bit colours), the game will actually run on the P800, but the colours will be all f*cked up, making it unusable.

OK, thanks Raven now to the real point of what I did and how the phone is in the shop. I did install aUIQ app colour screen changer thinking , (being a real novice it would give me different screen colours) . When I switched the phone on all the main screen functions were gone,no messages, internet, installations/uninstall,storage manager or master reset.SE said the phone should have reinstalled them ,I even tried the" ------- "second hold on the on button but to no avail.
As I asked a bit earlier is that a warranty issue?

It should be covered by the warranty, but I know one other user here who had a warranty problem because he had installed some 3'rd party softwares that were not digitally signed by SE. This, of course, is just a load of BS, and no reason to invalidate the warranty. The shop this user was dealing with was just being difficult, and he eventually got it sorted out.
Just out of curiosity, what exactly was the software you had problems with, do you have a link to it?
would that be psiloc's palette changer by any chance?
when i installed it, then restarted, it wholly crashed, and i had to use the file manager on the pc to start deleting files willy nilly to get the "your system files are corrupted" and then have it reformatted
Hi nk8 , yes it probably was the same, it was titled psiloc colour changer if I remember correctly.
Thanks Raven for the idea about the warranty problem I am still waiting for my P800 to be returned ,do you think they will just be able to do a firmware update to rectify the lost software?
just an apps update, I checked the psiloc download and it was
the psiloc colour schemes app ,it did specify use with the P800; also as a postscript to the warranty case, SE sells the P800/P900 on the platform of them being OPEN systems. To make use of third party applications!
